Nativity scenes are not Biblical. They are derived from European traditions...primarily from Spain.
According to some theologians the actual events as described in the Gospels happened over the course of several months/years.
Most historic events are not exactly as described...and there are several versions to them. Hence the word his-story.

The Nativity story that people are usually familiar is a mish-mash of Matthew and Luke, thereby being neither Matthew nor Luke.
In Matthew, Mary and Joseph already lived in Bethlehem, were visited by the Wise men in their home, fled to Egypt to escape Herod, and then years later, finding Bethlehem still unsafe, moved to Nazareth.
In Luke, Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth but had to travel to Bethlehem in an Empire-wide census (that is not mentioned in Roman records), could not find a room, were visited by shepherds, then spent 32 days in Jerusalem for the cleansing rituals before returning to their home in Nazareth.
The popular Nativity story is a blend of these two.

Dear Friend,
There is another error about the nativity scene you didn't mention, and that is... the baby (Jesus) is no longer in a manger. HE IS RISEN!
I personally, am not concerned about whether or not a nativity scene is correct or incorrect. My concern is...focusing on what is 'really' important and that is...Jesus Christ. The "Greatest" gift ever given and 'sharing' HIS GIFT of salvation with others. Period.
Sincerely in Christ Jesus,
lostnsavd...

Jesus was at least a year old by the time the wise men showed up so he wouldn't have been a baby in swaddling clothes sleeping in a manger....whatever a manger is....

*laughing* I heard a pastor once say, take the wise men from the nativity and put them across the room someplace, because the bible indicates they did not visit Jesus until He was older, not the night He was born.
That being said.....what does it matter, really?
