This question has been asked a lot in here today, too. I think you're going to find people are split on this. I think they should be able to celebrate Christmas. Firstly, here in the U.S., the holiday has been secular since at least the 1940's (if not earlier). Also, Christmas evolved from ancient pagan solstice celebrations. So - I think it's reasonable to look at any celebration this time of year as a HUMAN tradition belonging to all of us. Therefore - it is perfectly acceptable for everyone to celebrate Christmas, Solstice, or whatever they choose to call their late December holiday celebration and no one owns the December holidays. As a pagan - I would gladly invite any Atheist (or anyone for that matter) to celebrate solstice like the pagans do - with Yule trees, gift giving, santa, feasting, spending time with loved ones, caroling, and sharing with others less fortunate (none of those things were Christian - they were all incorporated into Christmas from earlier pagan solstice holidays) .

Well considering that the majority of christians do not really celebrate xmas for what it is supposed to symbolize I'd say everyone is invited to celebrate it. A little FYI, christmas is actually more of a corporate tool now than a holiday, we have been conditioned to go out and spend hundreds of hard earned dollars on goods and materials that otherwise we really do not need. So bluntly put, we do not celebrate xmas as a means of bringing family closer together but more so that little johhny or little susan gets a damn playstation 3.

I think that anybody should be free to celebrate whatever holiday they chose. Its the truth. Christmas is pagan in origin. Christians just have a long history of taking things and making it theirs. Besides you can celebrate Christmas in a way that doesn't have anything to do with a God or religion. Santa Claus does it every year.

Asked and answered many times before.
Just because Christmas and Christ share the same five letters does not mean they are related. That's like claiming that the singer Christian Chenoweth is part of Christmas.
Christmas is a pagan holiday celebrating the winter solstice. It was assimilated by Christians to recruit nonbelievers.

I don't think this time of year should be reserved for just one group of people to celebrate...if you don't like that atheists celebrate Christmas I guess you got a problem because I'm going to party.
Christmas has no religious connotation for me, it's just Coca Cola Santa's and kitschy Christmas jingles, lot's of food and drinking and general jollity and presents and good company...jealous or something?

It was originally a Pagan holiday. Christians declared it "Christ's birthday" (even though there's no evidence of that) to aid in conversion. Many of the traditions (including the Christmas tree) are Pagan in origin, and predate Christianity.

No. But I will enjoy the holiday anyway. And I use 'holiday' in the modern general sense.
By-the-way, they now 'enjoy' Christmas in Japan with a spending frenzy too.

I think Christmas is a fun excuse to party and have fun for atheists, just as the winter solstice is a fun excuse to party and have fun for Christians.
