F.Y.I. to the guy bad-mouthing Canada and Britain. Both countries are thriving because of immigration and I welcome immigrants into both of my countries of citizenship. In fact the Canadian dollar was higher than the American. Immigrants are hard-working and what all nations were founded on. Your ignorance is showing.

I can easily speak as I have lived in both countries. As for the guy swearing at me...you are really letting your ignorance show. Glad you aren't a representative of American's overall. In my opinion American's for the most part are thoughtful and intelligent. You know you have a low IQ when you have to start swearing to voice your opinion. You are wrong. Canadians have never lived off of America. Please! Study history!

Some very interesting answers. All of you have valid points. When it comes to the right answers, it is easy for all of us to come up with solutions that appear simple. As for American's, I cannot comment for Canadians as a whole population but I have no problem with American's and do not think one nation is better than the other. There is good and bad in all nations. Is there anti-American sentiment in Canada? Yes, there are those that are anti-American for their own reasons. We have American's living in Canada, that are anti-American and vice-versa. The good thing is we have been given the freedom to make choices. In some countries around the world, people do not have the freedom to choose and voice their opinions. All opinions expressed are valid and I thank all of you for voicing your honest answers.

I cannot choose the correct answer because and will leave it to the community to vote. This is a controversial topic with no easy solutions.

Thank you.

Immigration into the USA is what this country is founded on. I support immigration from every country.

I don't support any illegal immigration, or immigration that breaks the laws. In those cases, deport them back.

Good in moderation, bad when everyone and their entire family starts coming over and telling all their friends. Moving here for a better life and to help your family is one thing, but just coming for money then going back home is not cool. Granted unless you're 100% Native American, you were an imigrant, but the whole African-American, European-American, Asian-American, etc. is stupid. Where you born here? Yes? Ok, you're American. No? Ok, here are you options: leave, become a citzen, visit a few cities for vacation, or go to Canada. Canada has free meds, and you can live there for free for up to a year paid by the government...or longer.

Irish emigration? Italian? Things are very different these days. This country is well populated now. People always looking for a decent job. If they will pay a decent wage.

Don't attempt to compare oranges with apples. That was then, this is now. Now the wholesale influx of millions of MEXICAN CITIZENS compete with American Citizens for jobs or, most often, compete to depress wages.

In total, it is clearly a bad thing. Offshore export of jobs and the influx of millions of MEXICAN CITIZENS is a bad thing for the working men looking to make a decent living. Very small percentage of MEXICAN CITIZENS who manage to run the border actually pick oranges and lettuce. They work in meat packnig plants, construction and such and very many are skilled tradesmen in plumbing, homebuilding, electricians, automotive repair, etc. There are many MEXICAN CITIZENS who have their own shops all over the USA.

I have a real hard time understanding this fear.
First world countries are being flooded with thousands of immigrants who are destroying the white countries. It makes me blink like crazy: Why don't they stop this immigration?

Now that the ballot is near, politicians will scream and yell against immigrants, they reach office and forget about it while the public will be left screaming. Then, election again and the shepperd will come back to the sheep with the same screaming. In a way, the game seems like the Roman circus.

Stop illegal immigration once and for all and period!

*LEGAL* immigration has always been part of the heritage of the US.... It is the reason for the nick name "melting pot"...
Canada may be doing all right for now... but then again they haven't had an overwhelming flood of immigrants (legal or illegal).... Yet... when illegals find out that they can live for a year free off of the government y'all won't be able to build a wall high enough to keep them out...
As for the UK... it has little time left as any vestige of it's old self... soon, if things keep on their present tract, it will be a wholly Muslim nation... sad...

I think we should have a lot stronger border patrol, but I am perfectly fine with immigration (as long as the person does everything legally).

Everything needs a balance. Immigration did help build US, and it's responsible for making our country a powerhouse. We steal the great minds of other country, and that further our economic growth. In Canada's case, there growth was from the rich bring their money to that country . It takes money to makemoney. Alot of it had to do with CHinese business men wanting to hide their money when CHina took over Hong Kong. SInce Canada had a more friendly immigration policy for the well to do, they recieve a a disporportionate amount of Hong Kong money. As to Countries doing well because of immigration, that's a matter of perspective. The GNP may increase, but that doesn't mean the living condition improves. If there are more people in a country, of course there will be an increase in the GNP, but then there are more people who would also take from the pie. The individual might lose while te country grows.

Immigration has gone to far right now. We are being flooded with underqualified professionals. I work with alot of Filipinos and Indians and the education is not equivalent to Americans. THey may have a few good colleges, but I found in the case of the FIlipinos, many of the colleges are just diploma mills. THey just graduate students, with out truely educating them. They also have been caught cheating on the board exams. THis year a government official was caught aiding nursing students in cheating and a ban was levied on the Philipines. Unfortunately that ban did not last long. Frankly my Filipino friends tell me that the cheating is highly organized and in a massive scale. THis is a great concern, since human lives are jeopardized by this. If you look at the FIlipino community, it's made up with alot of college graduates doing jobs below their alleged educational level. There are alot of nursing assistants who graduated as nurses in the Philipines. THis should there is a lack of quality of nurses coming from that country and that the average nurse from the Philipines are inferior to the average American educated nurse. SImilar activites are starting in India. Because of the money generated from outsourcing , new colleges are popping all over India pumping out engineers. Unfortuantely, these colleges are not interested in making good engineers, but rather in collecting tuition, and do not bother even teaching their students. THat is why outsourcing is reversing itself in India. As to unskilled immigrants, last year our labor market is tight, and according to economist, we need to import more workers to help our company grow. THat is no longer true, and unemployment is rising slightly. On the other hand, economist also stated that immigrants are preventing our salaries from increasing. People's pay has stagnated, despite the increase in our economy. Of course I have to state, that if we have such a tight market, we do not need so many social program and need to force the able bodied who is using government assistants back to work. Also the problem of bring in these foreign owrkers is that despite the fact they are unqualified, corporations still hire them so they can leverage a lower pay on it's workers. They also use them, because immigrant workers are less liekly to complain about illegal activities done by the company. I have seen companies use immigration to silence H1B visa holders. Companies trump up charges and then have the immigrant deported. Immigrants also tend to be naive and is tricked to do illegal activities by the employer. All this helps lower the standards of the work place.

A lesson from Ireland who grew tremendously is that we need to balance several factor. Irelands tremendous advancement is at the back of educated CHinese workers, Nigerian unskilled laborers, and a good government policy. The lesson is that they made sure that they balanced the number of unskilled workers and skilled workers to ensure a balanced society. The main flaw is that they failed to use this to help their own people prosper and there is a growing resentment in Ireland of the number of immigrants in their country. One of the reason illegal immigration is bad , is that the immigrants takes away our ability to regulate the number of inskilled workers and caused a inbalance in our economy. A countries success is highly tied in to it's ability to regulate the activites in it's country.

Go to Canada instead. Much better medicare and a better quality of life and a stronger economy and you don't have to worry about being shot in church or school or the mall.

EDIT:

I really don't know where some of the yanks get their information but immigrating to Canada is not free or cheap.
All applicants must be eligible, healthy, and provide proof of of sufficient funds to sustain yourself for 6 months. Medication is not free, but cheaper. The government will pay for ESL schooling for up to a year if language is a barrier to gaining employment.
