They can't. Notice the dearth of answers...

When something good happens, they'll attribute it to their god. However, they remain deafeningly silent on the problem of evil. Or they'll blame it on the devil or free-will, thus negating the powers and benevolence of their god.

EDIT: Told you so! Just look at the person squirming below me. It must be difficult convincing yourself of this every single day...

Because people see patterns that don't exist. People see the things they want to see and pick out the patterns that coincide with their particular belief system.

Child abuse is when an adult doesn't know the correct way to deal with anger/frustration towards a child, and they take it out in the wrong way by physically hurting them. Make sure he knows that it is not the child's fault.

This answer will be a little long and I will take a circuitous (sp?) route, but eventually I will get there.

1) Love, by it's nature can not be forced.

2) God wanted a love relationship with all of His creatures. He does not want us to be His slaves, who do exactly what he says in fear of our lives. He does not want us to be robots who automatically do the right thing. He wants us to chose to follow his ways, and have a loving relationship with both Him and our fellow people.

3) If we do not choose His ways He continues to love us and does not take our choices from us.

Imagine here your mother. She loves you very much (I hope). She doesn't want you doing anything that is bad for you. She wants you to always make the best decisions.
Saturday morning she sees you watching TV, she comes over, turns off the TV and softly and lovingly says 'Is this the best thing to do with your mind and your time? I will make you a nice healthy breakfast while you go study for that biology test'.
You come out and find a breakfast of orange juice, bran, and milk. You kinda wanted bacon and eggs, but you know that your mother will tell you that cholestoral isn't what is best for you.
That afternoon some of your girlfriends come over and your mother hears you talking about the class nerd. There in front of all of your friends she says "Now, girls is that the nicest thing you can say?"
At the end of the day, would any kid want this kind of mother? Why not? She is micromanaging, nagging (nicely), and generally not aware of necesary boundries.
God is more like a good mother. He helps you know right and wrong but he doesn't force you to do right. He doesn't take a beer bottle out of your hand (even if you will be driving). He doesn't make you have bran for breakfast or study for biology on Saturday morning when you want to watch cartoons.

4) Unfortunately, we have power over each other. God gave us that, so that we could bond together and share the love He gave us with each other. However, when we choose not to follow him, we don't loose the gifts of procreation, of community or of being loved.

5) This freedom allows us to abuse the power we have over each other.

God does not step in for two reasons:
1) Because he does not want to treat us like the mother in my example.
and
2) Because by not following God, we have chosen our own way. To be fair to us, God has to let us see the consequences of our actions (or we would never understand what the choices are). So he allows us to follow the trail we choose. As an example to those who watch, and also to bring us to a realization of ourselves.
No childabuser I have ever talked to (I'm in family therapy and youth corrections, I talk to a lot of them). They realize there is something flawed in themselves, where they wouldn't know that if they had been stopped in time.

People are pretty quick to point a finger at satan or someone else but the real blame lies only with human kind as a whole. Our personalities derive from how our past experiences in life effected us. Somethings dig into us and manifest and others it just rolls off. So through a complex mixture of what we believe, what we have been subjected to and how we handled it makes us into either great parents, business men/women, sports players or murderers, rapist and failures.
Child abuse is horrible but we have to stop it, not some imaginary friend people have that promises a magical after life.

*Why the hell am I getting thumbs down? I guess some people are freaking brain dead, psychology is all around us. Use it

I think the best person to ask would be a Minister, Vicar/Priest. I know that God allows satan power in this world-he was cast out of Heaven down to earth for rebelling against God. Men or women can either serve God or satan. That is why Jesus Christ came to Earth: To be a living sacrifice that we might be forgiven our sins if we turn to Him and ask for forgiveness. Temptation enters through our minds sometimes via our eyes. We then take a decision-do we make the right choice or the wrong choice? God gives us the freedom to decide.

Another logic and reason one could use to show the flaw in god. A majority of religious people claim that god is "All-powerful" "All-loving" and "All-knowing"

So why would a god with these traits allow such harm to come to a child? Does he care but can not do anything about it? Then god is NOT all-powerful.
If he can and does not want to stop it then he is NOT an All-loving and All-powerful god

So why call him god?

i completley agree, child abuse is disgusting, and the lowest of the low, in the same way GOD did not prevent innocent jewish men women and children being liquidated in the holocaust, or the japanese of hiroshima or nagasaki. i m ust admit i suffered abuse as a child (mental and physical only) but notice how the catholic faith especially is the one faith where child abuse (mainly sexual) is rife.

at least as an athiest my children wil be sheilded from such vile activities

If God is responsible for everything, what is the purpose for the human mind?

Here is the answer:
HUMANS abuse children. God doesn't. If humans can't figure that out, I guess giving them a brain was a waste of time.

do you not think that God weeps at the knowledge of all sins and unrighteousness.

God did not spare his only begotten son, and even at the cross Jesus proclaimed why have you forsaken me!
someone answered this in sunday school many years ago. God had to turn his head because he had to shed his tears.

it is written that in the last days Satan will rage in the hearts of men.
so, if men had full control, most would choose righteousness. but because men and women are bridled with burdens from sources of evil and because of the choices they make, of course child abuse will occur!
