the highest draft number called was 195. Why did my father never have to serve in the war? he was not a draft dodger, nor was he gay, and nor did he flee to Canada

it depends on the year, his age and the time he was called up if any. when they did the draft they called so many numbers each year so the year your father had to worry about the number may have been less then 180. also it was 18 year old for the year that got drafted first. then if they needed more men they would increase the age. your father also could have gotten a deferment that means that since he was in collage he could finish before having to go in. and maybe by the time he finished college the war had ended for the u.s. why don't you ask him why?

George 2 nailed it down. You did not mention the year he was 19, that plays a major role on figuring this all out. Just because he did not go, does not mean anything about him personal in a negative way. Its just that he is caught up in the same years as the Viet Nam Conflict, a lot of raw emotions still emits, and please do not take what you read in "answers" to be talking about your father specifically. A lot of this is in general terms and not meant to offend,, just venting mostly.

If he was enrolled in a University as a full time student he may have received a deferment.

Is your dad an only child? or is he the only male born? Those may be some possibilities.
