The easiest way to download Youtube videos is to go to one of the many sites that do this for you. Youtubes videos are in a flash (flv) format which may requrie additonal software.

Vixy.net will convert a Flash Video / FLV file (YouTube's videos, etc) to MPEG4 (AVI/MOV/MP4/MP3/3GP) file online before you download so you can watch it with your regular media player (e.g. Windows Media Player).

I highly recommend using VLC media player for viewing any video format (including flv). It is the most popular player out there and completely free.

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

If you use Firefox there are extensions available that will allow you to download embeded videos directly from your browser. Unplug is one that will work (Yahoo is not allowing me to post the link right now).

I use Tech Crunch's tool to download vids as .flv, then I use Media Coder (free software) to convert from flv to mpg/mov/etc.
Plus .flv is a highly compressed format - 3 min movie is often about 10 mbs. If you downloaded the converted file online, the mpg/mov/etc would be more like 50 megs - thats a lot to download. I suggest that you give this a try. If you're on a slower connection, this is a good option for you.
