The biggest reason to get a HIDA scan is to determine just how much function the gallbladder has. Because you don't have gallstones, insurance companies don't cover the gallbladder removal. I had a liver infection when I was on chemotherapy. My gallbladder had to be taken out about a year later due to scar tissue that adhered to the gallbladder, liver and intestines. An ultrasound didn't show much, nor did a CT-scan exept for a darker denser area around the gallbladder. The HIDA scan showed my gallbladder had lost over 90% of its function so I had to have it out. Then the insurance company oked the surgery.

The HIDA scan is easy and only requires you lie on a hard table while the scanner does all the work. Mine took about an hour and one-half to two hours.

Best of luck and have a Happy Christmas.

Itching and fatigue point to liver problems, if the pain is in the upper right quarter of your torso this also points towards liver trouble.

I had my gallbladder removed after it proved to be full sludge and non-functional.

Collapsed ? Are you sure ? It can kind of shrivel up when very diseased.....You may have gall stones and some insurance companies will not allow a doctor to remove the gall bladder until the gall bladder shows sign of disease not just stones.
