I know plenty of Muslims who drink alcohol.. but do not eat pork. Is one more of a sin than the other or are these two things equal? Thank you.

Thank you Hyze, I am aware that it is not allowed, that wasn't my question though.

I've met people like this. Alcohol and Pork are both very haram. I am assuming some people see alcohol as a social thing or they like the way it affects them. They probably see no positive aspect in pork so avoid it. I also think many (especially in the east) are raised to think it is very disgusting and dirty. They don't put cute little pink pigs in cartoons. When they think pig, they think boar and they think haram and disgusting.

Exactly! Neither Are Good!
But I know people who eat What ever they want, but stay away from alcohol DIRECTLY. As in they eat it all, even if it has alcohol IN IT. But they don't Directly Drink it. What the heck is going on.
And if you see the Big Muslim Sheikhs and IMAMS who own Oil and Large Land that May Have Oil and Own Hotels, actually drink alcohol themselves! They actually Get Drunk With their Western Investors! They actually drink more then the investors!
This is a bad thing!
They are both a sin.

I'm so glad you brought this up because I was wondering the same thing. I'm not Muslim but I have a few Muslim friends. Two of my Muslim friends drink alcohol but won't eat pork and I always wondered if maybe drinking alcohol was less sinful in Islam than eating pork.

Just a side note for all of you Muslims that live in the US and still keep halaal--I give you a lot of credit. I've seen through some of my Muslim friends that it can be really difficult at times, (especially if you don't live in a big city that has stores which carry halaal foods or restaurants that serve it) and I admire you for staying true to your religion and following your beliefs!

Clearly alcohol is bigger sin, though both are haram. If you want to know why it is that some Muslims drink but they won't eat pork, it's because they find pork disgusting, while they are tempted by effects of alcohol. Pork won't make anyone drunk and won't arise any special feelings, while I don't think I need to explain how is the case with alcohol.

Anyhow, it's better that they do just one sin rather than 2. Although it would be much better if they stayed away from both of them.

From my personal experience, despite alcohol being the bigger sin of the 2, I've noticed that only people who completely neglect all aspects of Islam would consume pork. I don't know any person who prays (I don't mean 5 times a day, but at all) who consumes pork, but I know some Muslims who pray but they drink (although they will have to answer for that, and their prayer will not be accepted for 40 days).

There was a case of a companion of Mohammad s.a.w.s. who drank but he loved Allah s.w.t. and His Messenger a.s.w.s. He was lashed a few times but was very eager to participate in jihad and fight the enemies of Allah, and finally Ali r.a. gaoled him, after which he asked to join jihad, and he was granted his wish, and he never drank alcohol again after that.

Good question, I see it all of the time. The alcohol is just an influence from social or recreational pressures. Since its an intoxication and can become addictive a person like that would much rather take the alcohol and not the pork. Anyway, the Quran does mention people getting drunk but not eatting pork

Alcohol is worse because Mohammad (as) called it mother of all evil. Pork is also haram, so be a good Muslim and stay away from both.

I have always found this kind of interesting myself. I know people who consider themselves Muslim who drink alcohol, don't pray, don't fast for Ramadan, but would never in a million years eat pork. I think it has to do with how you are raised. If you are raised not eating a certain type of food, then you will probably never start. For instance, I don't eat, say, sheep brains. Not because it's not halal (I actually don't know if it is or not), but because I find it disgusting. Muslims who drink alcohol probably continue to find pork disgusting.

It's so ironic that people do this because of two reasons.

Pork is forbidden except in the case of need. When an urgent time arises, it becomes permissible.

However when it comes to alcohol and intoxicants, Allah says in the Quran that the drunk person is in a state of kufr until he is sober again. In no way are intoxicants permissible (unless for medical reasons only), yet people will choose to do this yet be highly disgusted at the idea of eating pork...

Anyways, Allah knows their intentions more than me so only He can judge.

"If a bucketful intoxicates, a sip of it is haram." (Reported by Ahmad Abu Daoud, and al-Tirmidhi.)

From Muslim (from Abi Said): The Prophet said: "Allah has forbidden alcoholic drinks. Whoever this verse reaches while they still possess any of it, they are not to drink nor to sell."

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 503:
Narrated Abu Al-Juwairiyya:
I asked Ibn 'Abbas about Al-Badhaq. He said, "Muhammad prohibited alcoholic drinks before It was called Al-Badhaq (by saying), 'Any drink that intoxicates is unlawful.' I said, 'What about good lawful drinks?' He said,'Apart from what is lawful and good, all other things are unlawful and not good (unclean Al-Khabith).

Assuming the person is not a very religious Muslim, he may have learned to appreciate alcohol, but as he grew up without pork, he might be turned off, either by the taste or just the idea of eating pig. Like most westerners would be turned off at the idea of eating snake, or monkey, or dog.
In other words, faith probably no longer governs the choice at that stage. Although a liberal Muslim could probably give a better answer than this.
