Lack of knowledge.
Hosea 4:6
my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. "Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.
Job 36:12
But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword and die without knowledge.
Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Proverbs 1:22
"How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
Proverbs 1:29
Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD,
Proverbs 2:6
For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Proverbs 12:1
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.
Proverbs 14:6
The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning.

I don't understand why people believe in an invisible skydaddy and pray to a guy who's been dead for almost 2,000 years. I don't understand why people listen to the teachings in a book that's almost as old and has zero credibility.
Look, just because I'm agnostic doesn't mean I can't enjoy the holidays. And while I don't know what happens after we die, that doesn't really bother me. And if I want someone to talk to privately, I'll meditate or talk to my cat.
Besides, almost all the expressions of prayer I see (is that what you mean by "any one to talk to privately"?) are as public and excessive as possible.
The real question is why people become believers.

How can Christians enjoy holidays that they hijacked from pagans such as Christmas and Easter?
Seriously, your logic is flawed, my friend. Of course atheists enjoy joyous holidays - time off with family and friends, enjoying the change of season, exchanging gifts, having paid days off from work..... that's all joyous.
Many atheists and pagans I know devote time to charities as well.
As for going anywhere when they die - they want proof there is somewhere to go is all. If God and heaven were proven real, they'd accept that.
As for talking to them privately - most of them have grown tired of unsolicited emails that preach the love of a deity we don't believe in - or threats of eternal damnation if we DON'T start believing. I have.
Evonne - most atheists, pagans, etc - have read the Bible several times and some have studied it. It's not "lack of knowledge". Its that we can't suspend rational thought to believe in the deity from the bible.

Many become atheists b/c they read the bible. People use their own sense of logic and what feels right to them to determine what they believe. If you belong to a religion and believe in god that's fine, but that doesn't work for everyone. Just live and let live.
And yes, I can talk to my friends about anything and everything b/c I don't bother with "friendships" that are fake or superficial in any way. If i'm going to put time into a relationship and put my heart into it that person is going to be a very very close friend. I don't bother with acquaintance type friendships.

it is not a case of not wanting to go to a better place when we die, it is a case of when you die your electrical impulses stop and you along with all of your memories are maggot fodder. I still enjoy myself at christmas time, i don't need a religeon to enjoy myself, i love my life and wouldn't change it for anything. I still do alot of work for charity but i do it because i want to, not because some book says i should. If i want to talk to someone, i just do! not quite sure what you are getting at to be honest.
and as for people quoting the "holy books" they are hardly going to say "this book is just something a guy made up and lost for a few hundred years so we have changed it a bit to suit" are they?

Believing in a God doesn't change the reality that nothing will happen to you when you die. I can talk to an imaginary friend too, if I wish, but I won't believe that a fabricated entity has power over my death and/or existence.

People become atheists simply because they stop seeing reasons to believe in a higher power. I'm not an atheist, but I think this is the most rational answer to this question.

I'm very happy with the life I've got and wanting more isn't going to make it happen.

Ahahahaha, that was really cute!
Sweetie, most of us celebrate Christmas -the American secularized way.
It's not that we don't want to have an imaginary friend, it's just that there isn't one ;-)
