What do these words mean?
damit, dazu, davor, danach, dabei, darueber, dahin, da(whatever).
I see Deutsche benutzen these words all the time and very loosely. I looked in a wortbuch but the uebersetzen don't really help. Can someone tell me how and when you use these words? Thanks.

With it, in addition, before that, afterwards, at the same time, about that, over there, there.
Good luck with German.

Damit I usually see on bills, I gather it's approximately because of that.
Dazu I usually see on menus, like "with that" as in would you like fries?
Davor is before that, danach is after that.
Dabei I usually hear spoken: Ich bin dabei for "I'm there!" -- may well be a Swiss thing though.
Darueber and dahin not sure, I think they're both "over there".

All these words are adverbs with a bunch of meanings. It would end as a long essay to write an exhaustive list about the proper use of these words. But I've got the impression that you are advanced in German, and eager for more knowledge. So I think I should tell you the secret how natives help themselves. I'm sure you already know the Duden, Band 1, Rechtschreibung. Now it's time to open the Duden, Band 2, Stilwörterbuch. It will give you exactly those exhaustive lists of examples how to use difficult words in full sentences. All the words, you want to know about, are in there. And of course, the ways the words are treated in that book are relevant and safe, as everything that's written in the Duden.

damit = therewith, dazu = thereto, davor = before it, danach = thereafter or thereto, dabei = here, darueber = thereabouts or above it; dahin = therein, da = here or there;
e.g. eins, zwei, drei, wir alle sind dabei!
E.g. da ist ein Baum, und die Sonne scheint darueber = there’s a tree, and the sun is shining above it. (a picture);
e.g. wo ist Aachen? Ich gehe danach! = Where’s Aachen? I’m going there!
