My boyfriend has been having a really hard time these last 2 weeks. He has been very disconnected with myself and many of his friends. I haven't really heard from him in the last 2 weeks other than when he wanted to let me know that he was having a hard time and that was why he hadn't talked to me.
Well last night I got a voice mail from him saying that he thinks he can talk about all the 'shitty' things that happened, and he would talk to me soon. My problem is that I have a hard time consoling people. I can never think of the right thing to say when bad things happened. So what are some things that seem right to say during bad times, to help make someone cheer up. That may seem dumb, but I really am terrible at finding the right thing to say.

You really don't have to say anything. Just listen... thats really all he wants anyway.

Your question is not dumb as many people have similar problems. However, in moments of pain and despair , the best words are the ones that come from the heart. Sometimes saying nothing also works wonders.Peoples needs are as varied and different as those in pain; hence their reactions range from wanting to just talk and have someone listen, to having somebody speak words of consolation. Since this guy is your boyfriend, just react from the heart when he finally talks to you; there is no way to prepare in advance with clinches since you don't know what his issues are.Just think of yourself and how and what you will expect from others if you found yourself in the same situations, and let that guide you.
