do you have only one cat? sometimes it is a litterbox issue and he needs more privacy. I'll answer this as if you only have one cat.... How large is the litterbox? Cats are SO wierd about their litterboxes and maybe he doesn't like the smell after he pees in it. Maybe you could try a larger litterbox OR set up another litterbox at another location and see if he uses one for poo and one for pee (My cats usually use one catbox for poo and another one for pee). It may also be that he doesn't like the cat litter (or cat litter additive) that you are using. You might try some other types of cat litter to see if it makes a difference (they make wheat catlitter, recycled newspaper catlitter, catlitter with cedar in it..., etc.). A couple of other things I've heard about but never tried - one of my cousins had a cat that was pooping in the livingroom. She put one of those things that you plug into the electrical outlet and it has an oil in it that is a calming pheremone for cats. They're alittle bit expensive, but this took care of the problem and the cat went back to using the litterbox. I have also heard from the vet technicians where I take my cats that Cat Attract really works. It is a cat litter additive that "attracts" the cat back to his box. I haven't seen this in the pet stores though, you might have to order online. If you haven't already, I'd take your cat in just for a checkup to make sure there isn't anything physically wrong with him. Then you could ask your vet if there is anything else you can try. I hope it works out for you. Cleaning up stuff all the time is NO fun.

When he poops, is it near his litter box? I had a cat that would pee in his, but I would always find the poop on the floor nearby. Then one day I actually watched him and he was standing in the litter box, but he was too close to the end of the box so it was dropping onto the floor. I ended up having to get a rubbermaid tub with high sides...it prevented anymore problems.
Also, some cats can just be stubborn...especially the males.

try the following:
1. is the litter deep enough?
2. is it in a private place where nobody can see him?
3. is the litter box cleaned daily? cats will not poop in a dirty area, it must be clean
4. try switching litter brands
hope these help [x]

Does he poop near the box, just not in it? I have a cat that does that. She actually is in the box, but her butt hangs over the side. I tried getting her a larger box and am planning on getting her a cover for it. Meanwhile, I just spread newspaper on the floor under the pan.
My other cat has never done this and they were raised together.

My cat did this when we moved to our new house. He would usually poop on the floor by the sliding glass door, behind the curtain...I just placed the litter box in the area where he would do his business and he started using it again, and gradually, the box was moved back to it's original place, and everything was fine.

If the cat pooped somewhere in your house take a piece of it and put it in the litter box therefore the cat smells it next time and eventually will feel comfortable pooping there.
