after they rung up all your stuff and there are people in line behind you.

yes, and the person behind me paid for it. They didn't want me to pay them back. Then a few months later a woman in front of me didn't have enough so I paid the rest, kind of like that guy at Starbucks who paid for the person behind him, and so on and so on...

YES! I've walked in to a grocery store with my purse, but I had completely left my wallet at home. It's awfully embarrassing, and nerve racking the moment you find out you haven't got the money to pay for the 5 bags of groceries in front of you. I think the worst part are the people (if any) that are standing patiently in line behind while you search for a way to pay for your items. The only thing to do is apologize profusely for any inconvenience you may have caused everyone and high tail it outta there! After I found my wallet at home, I made sure I ventured out to a different grocery store!

It happens, there's nothing you can do about it (I'm sure it wasn't intentional), and hopefully your shortcomings at the register will be a nice reminder of how NOT to forget next time.

Yes, this happened to me. I was sooo embarrassed. The cashier was very nice. She said it happens all the time. She put my groceries in a cart and one of the employees put it in the back freezer. I drove home, got my check book and went back. It took an extra 20 minutes or so. The staff at the store were very courteous. I felt badly with all the people lined up behind me. But,the cashier ignored the glares and helped me.

I haven't done it since, though! I come prepared. Now, of course, there are banks and ATMs, so it's not so bad as it was before.

I realized before they rung it up, so I just asked them to put my cart in the back while I drove home and got my wallet.
FYI:
However (as a former cashier for 3+ years), most places can "suspend" the transaction so that they don't have to ring it all through over again. They can just call up the transaction on the cash register again when you get back.

Yes, I had cleaned out my purse and had left my wallet in the other purse.

By the way, no one was behind me so no hard feelings.

NOW, I always make sure before I go in the store that I have my wallet with me or ckbook.

oh my gosh, I just did that the other day at walmart. I was so embarrassed, every body was looking at me like I was a low life. I asked them to hold my stuff for me, and when I came back they had put everything away. I had to do all my shopping all over again. I came right back in about 15 min. so they must have thought I didn't have any money.

Yep..well not ME but my Fiancee ALWAYS forgets his wallet in the car and then I have to wait in line and get all the nasty looks and hear all the annoyed sighs. Its so embarrassing and I pretty much die inside when it happens since I have social anxiety.

That befell to me some cases, if the food market keeper knew me, i might take the stuff abode and pay later, if no longer i might pass away each and all the paying for on the shop and purchase it at yet another shop later

Yup..did that at Walmart once while Christmas shopping. I had to leave the things, drive home, drive back and pay, then go home again. Luckily it was only a 15 min drive....but still it sucked.

Yup. Not a big deal. They just put the order to the side and when you come back they can pull it up without having to ring it all up again.
