eat and take it slow. Also, try sticking to the same kind of drink the whole night to avoid a hang over. Drink water every other drink or so will help a lot

Definitely eat something before you start partying. I'd recommend a nice healthy dinner at home (or even if you go out... don't just have a salad, it's a holiday so you have every right to a good meal). Something with meat, heavy starchy carbs - potatoes would be a good choice - and veggies, and lots of water of course! The more you eat, the less room you'll have for booze, and what you do drink will get absorbed more slowly so you won't get drunk so quickly.
Limiting yourself to one drink per stop is a good idea. Sip, don't gulp, and if you feel tipsy, you can always just have a Coke (it will LOOK like you're drinking rum-and-coke, but only you have to know the truth!). If you have mixed drinks, it's smartest to mix your own so you have control over how much alcohol is in them. Avoid drinking from a punch bowl or pitcher if you can, because you don't know what is in it or how strong it is.
Stay away from really salty snacks while you're out. Parties always have chips and pretzels, but they'll just make you thirsty and want to drink more! Crackers, cocktail shrimp, cold cuts... those would be better choices and will stay in your stomach longer.
Alternate your alcoholic drinks with water or non-alcoholic drinks. Maybe even keep a bottle of water in the car for when your friend is taking you from party to party. Drink a big glass of water and take an Advil or Tylenol before bed, and drink another big glass of water as soon as you wake up. You may even want to keep a water bottle on your nightstand, because some people get cotton-mouth in the middle of the night after drinking.
Be safe and have fun!

I bar tended through college and can highly recommend eating a little something before you go out as well as while you are out. This will help slow down the "absorption" and lessen the affects, but don't forget...the body will process 1 oz of alcohol per hour REGARDLESS of what you are drinking.
Avoid that day after hangover feeling by taking a couple of aspirin and drink water. it helps avoid the headache, and dehydration ie. cotton mouth.
Cheers!

water, water and more damn water...... i drink 1 glass of water for every drink, to avoid dehydration, also, no mixing drinks. and definitely no shots. take 1 sip of the champagne and thats it, 1 glass of champagne mixed with whatever you are drinking will give you THE WORST hangover....... when you think you have had enough water, drink more. try to stay away from any cocktail that has a sweet alcohol in it, such as white russian or apple martinis...... the sweetness causes a mad hangover, eat little bits of food here and there and take 3 advil or aleve before bed with a huge glass of water!!!
stay safe and happy new year!!!!
