i've seen it argued that there couldn't be suffering with a benevolent and omnipotent God.

(there's a whole philosophy-thing based on this called theodicy)

anyway, the conclusion that most people arguing this arrive at is that therefore God must be malevolent or lazy.

but wouldn't it be just as hard to explain goodness and kindness in the face of a non-loving God?

For the Christian, the answer is the Incarnation of God in Christ and His taking all suffering on Himself so that all who are in the state of grace may live in Everlasting Bliss after death in full communion with God and all others in grace fro Christ has died ,Christ is risen and Christ will come again.
