In some nations, there is nothing you can do, because the power of the state is too strong. Look at Burma for example.

Many nations around the world seem to have accepted a form of democracy where everyone gets to vote once, and now there is a new leader who will be there forever.

People have to participate in the political process.

Look at Iraq ... people are living in a war zone where the death rate is attrocious, where much of the killing is being done because people are of the wrong religion, or because they believe in democracy. But the citizenry flock to vote.

Look at the fall of European Communism ... the people knew they could have been killed for demonstrating, but they demonstrated anyway, and they won because the old leaders were no longer willing to kill their own people to stay in power.

Seems the prevalent view is I can't do anything and it does not matter. The best way to ensure democracy remains in tact is to get out and vote. In some elections, mostly municipal the voter turn out is a meager 30 some percent. Taking an interest in what is going on about us, and to actively participate in our systems, pick up the phone and call your representative, write a letter to the local editor and keep our elected representatives accountable.

*I don't belong to any other country but the United States.
One sure way is to participate in the political system. Being aware of what's happening, voicing your opinions, and voting responsibly,by using common sense and not a bunch of stupid bumper sticker slogans or moron statements like about an "impeachable Administration". Try backing that up with facts.
Trash talk like that is not preventing,it's enabling Dictatorships.
Remember one thing....A President can only do what Congress let's him do,and the Supeme Court backs up!

By questioning authority and by holding it accountable. Yep, I know. Looks like we're well down that road already, doesn't it?

i think its very important that we protect our right to bear arms, and not just protect it, but practice it. that way you would have a way to protect yourself if that were to ever happen.
