I'm an amateur graphics designer and I've been using Serif Photoplus 6.0 for about a year and a half now. This Christmas my mom decided to buy me a better program but I need help deciding which one to tell her to get me. It can't be insanely unaffordable which means only around $100 or so. I want something worth buying though so I was hoping I could have some opinions on which brand is better. Advice on versions would be awesome as well. Thanks!

The professional version of Adobe Photoshop (CS3) is the standard by which other programs are measured. However it retails for $649.

Photoshop Elements 6 sells for $100 (at Best Buy) and if you're only a casual/amateur user and not doing graphic design as a career, you're probably fine with the stripped down functionality. I don't know much about Paint Shop Pro and the differences between the two, but I would stick with Adobe Photoshop...if/when you decide to go further with your graphic design, you'll want to get the full, professional version of Photoshop and Elements would at least give you a jump start in knowing the Adobe program.

Well, Photoshop is not any where near $100. PSP exceeds the $100 by 50%. Photoshop Elements 6 can be had for $100 or less and it will do almost everything the two you mentioned can do. But you say you are a graphics designer..... but working with photos? If not, then I would suggest Xara Xtreme for about $80. See at http://www.xara.com But if more photographic than graphic, for now go with Elements 6. You can get a 30 day free trial of Elements at Adobe.com and a 15 day free trial of Xara Xtreme at Xara.com

Adobe Photoshop the leading software used by Artists and photographers everywhere. But If you want to be graphics designer, I recommend Adobe Illustrator, although having both of them is best. Photoshop CS3, released a few months ago, is the latest version.

Since you have some familiarity with PhotoPlus I would advise upgrading to PhotoPlus X2. If you are a registered user of version 6 then you will get a substantial discount for upgrading. I use PhotoPlus X2 as well as PhotoShop and PaintShop Pro. What I like about PhotoPlus is that it is compatible with PhotoShop plugins and can import PaintShop Pro tubes (PhotoPlus calls them stamps). I also find the program to solid and stable.

I have used paintshop pro since it was a free program many many years ago.

I suggest going for that, it is essentially the same as photoshop, and most tutorials for photoshop can be adapted as the terminology and menu locations vary predictably.

File formats are 100% compatible as far as I can tell.

I am happy with it.

PSP ($100) and the GIMP (free) can both do about 85% of what Adobe Photoshop does.

They are basically both the same, they can do the same thing, if u are looking for simplicity and cheaper price than paint shop pro, if you want more detail, harder to learn with big price than photoshop.

I prefer Photoshop myself, used it for years. I like the ability to use multiple layers to build up shadows and complex things. I have the Elements version now, which is enough for my needs. It takes a bit of learning, but is well worth it, I think.

I personally find Photoshop Elements 5.0 the best, it's so simple to use.. I'd recommend that.

I love Paint Shop Pro...... You can do just about anything with it.
I took a series of online classes to learn how to use it better. You can't find anything better....or easier to use.
