My first test (NY State), I had a very nice woman testing me. I did perfect until I got to parallel parking. They set up some cones instead of using actual cars (safer of course), but I just couldn't see the cones. She actually gave me 4 chances to do it, because I was so close the first 3 times, but the forth time I put it on the curb. She had to fail me, but she was very nice about it.
My 2nd test was horrible. It was the first day of the year that it had snowed. The first thing the instructor asked me was if I had ever driven on snow before. When I told him no, and he actually told me 3 times to give up and come back another time. He actually said "this is your last chance, if you move the car and do 1 thing wrong, I'm going to fail you." The only thing that saved me on this test was, when I was doing a 3 point turn, I forgot to put the car in reverse (after the "1st point"), so I started moving forward but a snow bank stopped me from moving until I realized what I was doing. He also didn't make me parallel park for some reason.
So really it just depends on the examiner; the type of person they are & their attitude. I had a nice examiner who bent the rules for me, while another was an a-hole & was ready to fail me immediately. It's basically what sums up every person who works for the DMV. Some are nice and understanding while others are rude and have a chip on their shoulder. Just the luck of the draw.

My test was a nightmare!! First of all a silly woman pulled out in a junction and was inches from sending me and the tester miles off course, then she asked me to do an emergency stop without noticing the cyclist directly behind me who naturally went into the back of the car! then while doing my reverse round a corner i had about 5 teens telling me which way i should go (left abit ,right bit) then they thought it would be amusing to pretend i had run over one of their feet!!!!!!!! Talk about the worst test ever! I did pass (gos only knows how) much to my surprise! I was a complete wreck after and didn't drive for a year again!!
I hope i never have to go through it again.

Hi Andrew
I know the feeling recently i took my motorcycle test, the lad before was running late and passed, but on my turn he rushed through he test, left here right there, no problem, but on the last bit home, he stated turn left, so i indicated to turn and moved over, he then said "no towards the church" which was straight on, but did as i was asked, stopped my indicator etc and pulled up outside the test centre a few minutes later, he then said i failed due to my signalling, before i had chance to say anything he was gone behind a locked door!. i put it down to my error, but my instructor was not happy, but he did make this valid point.
DSA have a 44% pass rate to maintain, or a 56% failure rate!. i had failed before i even took the test, how else could they charge £60 each time and no one ask why? as they answer to no one it appears. and yes maybe im a bad rider too!.
But they did sucseed, as i havnt another £230 to retake the test, bike hire etc... i cant afford to take the test, so i now have to commute by driving, oh well.... another car on the road.. sorry other motorists.
the moral, i put this to experience, but the DSA dont work with integrity or honour, but thats there perk, isnt it.
good luck, merry xmas..

I took mine in an old Daimler with a preselect gearbox and the gearbox would not get top gear. the examiner said we should abandon the test but I said no if necessary I would do it in third. I was so angry with the car I forgot to be nervous. I argued with the examiner several times and when it finished he said "Good drive you've passed."

I took my first test on a Friday 13th. When he signed the failure certificate I discovered the examiner had the same initial and surname as me.
This is really true and frankly he was totally justified

I passed the written test and the driving test on the first try. Apparently I'm pretty special because ALL of my buds had to take one part or both parts several times before they passed!

My first time was a failure. The policeman brought me to a tiny 1 way street and told me to do a 3 point turn. Thinking I would fail if I ran over the lawn, I made it more like a 5 point turn, and he failed me.

Interesting, did he class it as a "major" then, or was it just the straw that broke the camel's back with the other "minors"?
I've always considered a serious fault as being one that caused another driver to swerve or slow down as a result of your driving . . . I suppose they could get you on the "slowing down" bit.
