This goes beyond one particular belief although this question comes from something I have just read in my local paper which is The Hartford Courant. A Hartford Church had its nativity display vandalized last night where someone smashed the faces of every porcelain figure in it. There have been instances where Wiccan wreaths in other states have been damaged. Even locally, in my neighborhood, people have had their lawn displays wrecked - and for what purpose? This is not how one shows love and respect towards their fellow human being.

I think it's despicable...destructive people sometimes don't need any logical reason, they will as happily smash a Victorian marble statue in a park as turn over and deface headstones in a Jewish cemetery. Sometimes vandalism is just that... mindless stupidity, other times it's pointedly anti something or other, how can you know for sure which it is?

I don't approve of vandalism, period. While I'd make an ezxception for displays put up with public funds promoting religion, this was obviously private property and presumably private funds.

BTW, I wouldn't assume the smashers are nonbelievers - they are just as likely to be of a rival sect (see Catholics versus Protestants, Shiites versus Sunnis, etc.) And some might even be personal grudges or kids molested in that same church. In fact, I'd start investigating the church to see just what has been going on behind closed doors....

That's sad... Whoever did this is making his opinion know by using the wrong methods.

But think about it ... This is the kind of thing that's exactly wrong with religiosity. It just causes people to become divided and I've personally grown quite tired of how the differences between religions are outwardly flaunted not only during holidays and festivals but also on ordinary days where dress, speech and customs are the name of the game.

What's your flaunt... what is it for you ... a cross, a badge a special way of dressing.... or what.??? ...and do you really need to do that ????

Perhaps a simple Santa Claus is a better way to share the happiness of the holiday season.... eh? ... and maybe a Cubs or a Yankee's or a Dodger's hat the rest of the year.

I live in the Hartford area, and I just saw that story on the news today. In the town I grew up in, (Glastonbury) a couple of kids stole figures from the church's nativity scene. They caught it on video, but the video is so grainy they probably won't be able to figure out who it is from that. I think it's disgraceful. Both cases were probably just some obnoxious kids.

I think it's hideous. Christian, Muslim, Wiccan, Jewish...whatever. Each has the right to celebrate their holidays and beliefs in their own way. People caught vandalizing these displays should be punished with a very severe sentence because it is treading on people's constitutional rights.

I just read in the paper about a couple of 16 year olds going around with screwdrivers poking holes in those inflatable Santas, Snowmen, and Globes, those big things people have on their lawns.
Can't they find something better to do, why are kids nowadays so disrespectful of other people's property?

I feel the same way about people using bats to knock mailboxes off as they drive by, spray painting graffiti, burning crosses on lawns, whatever. And it's, why are you so angry? Get an education and find a way to build up the world, not destroy the things in it!

Yes, "this is not how one shows love and respect towards their fellow human beings" - this IS how one shows how intolerance selfishly is to be displayed to the world around "them".

I am sorry you and your neighborhood/community have had to experience this.

"We are who we are" doesn't always mean that "We are who we should be".

Best to you this holiday season Barbara.

Gerry :)

Destroying anyone's property is illegal. To deliberately descecrate a Christmas display, to me, that is a sin.
As a Christian I think that we must show respect for other's beliefs before we can expect respect in return.

Vandalism of ANY kind is against the law, and I hope the perpetraters are caught and duly punished.
