My daughter's recent experience with David's Bridal (San Jose) was FABULOUS! She found exactly the dress she wanted on the first visit, it was in stock in the size she needed, and they got the alterations done quickly, and all of the above was at a very reasonable price.
For the most part, I would recommend them.
That said, I think the sticky thing is the employees at each individual store. I'd say they're worth a visit, but be prepared to walk away, if you're not getting service at the level you expect.

I went to 3 David's Bridal locations (one in Michigan, another in Illinois, and another in Missouri) and had excellent service with all 3! I have a hard time spending a lot of money on getting a dress I know I'm never going to wear again and when I saw my dress I knew it was 'the one' and it looked exactly like the one that I wanted which was about 5 times as more. Before I purchased it though I wanted to make sure I was making the right choice and tried a couple others on. I came to the store without an appointment and my consultant got me right in. She even called surrounding stores to see if they had the style bridesmaid's dress I wanted. I recommend them as far as price. Quality is really nice as well. I received a handwritten note as well once I got my dress and I would go back to them and I highly recommend them.

I was in the same boat---heard bad reviews but thought I'd try it out anyways. I went to one near Chicago.
I had to wait 25 min before someone took us back to the dressing room, and that was sort of frustrating, and then once I started trying things on, they have one sales associate per 2 clients, so she is running around and you have to do a fair amount of waiting between trying different things. Additionally, the dresses look nice on the website, but the quality was just not that great. I tried on something and found something that was okay (this was the first place I went) but then went to another appointment and fell in love with another dress---to be honest, after trying on 2 dresses at another place, I knew I wouldn't be going back to David's Bridal.
If all else fails, you might as well try it. You could find somehting you like for really cheap---but don't bank on it. And something else I have heard many times---if you get bridesmaid dresses through them, make sure to order them togehter! The dye lots vary drastically and you don't want people in all different hues of your wedding color!

I bought my dress for David's bridal and the service was unbelievable!! The lady gave me a hug when a chose my dress and even mailed me a card congratulating my dress and engagement. I would highly recommend David's Bridal. The dresses are great!
It is very important to make an appointment at David's so that you get one on one attention. Otherwise, it is super busy in there!

I've refused to even go to a DB because of the stories I've heard.
Also, I was at an expo where they were (before I heard the reviews) and gave them my information.
For MONTHS I heard nothing from them. Yet I was getting calls from a number that did not leave a message. A quick google search I found out it was DB trying to get a hold of me, but they apparently didn't think I was an important enough customer to leave a message.
So I haven't gone to them for anything, and I don't intend on it in the future either.

I don't know about the one in San Diego, but I went to the one in Monrovia/Duarte, and 2 of my bridesmaids went to one in NYC. All of us felt we got really good customer service. I was not pressured to buy anything, my consultant was patient and friendly, and they took the time to listen to my concerns and preferences. The even offered to get my bridesmaid's dress cleaned....since it was a floor model that people had tried on.
I would recommend it based on my personal experience.
Good luck and best wishes to you.
