They both provide pretty much the same picture quality and a very similar selection of channels. They both require a clear view of the southern sky. Dish is a little more in the southwest direction than DirecTV. Due to trees in my back yard I had to go with DirecTV. The prices are also very similar. I would compare similarly priced channel packages from each company and decide which one appeals to you more.

Both offer DVR units that have 2 tuners. This allows you to record 2 shows at once (or watch one while recording a different show). Dish offers a unit that allows you to connect 2 tv's to one box while still controlling them independently.

I switched from cable 4 years ago due to high prices, and it was definitely worth it for me. If you don't like it, switch back to cable after a year. The cable company will probably give you a better deal at that time just to get you back as a customer.

Having had both, I can say that I have been more satisfied with dish network. Better quality, more hookups(2 tv's on same reciever, in multiple rooms) for the same price, and better customer service.

The dish direction is true, because of the sattelite's geo-syncronous orbit. The only reason i haven't switched back to the dish network, is that their sattelite lies slightly more south-west than direct tv's sattelite; and I currently have a tree in the way.

We have dish but that is our only option. We live in the country.
