I think it's a crying shame that the one person's answer I was really interested in reading keeps getting deleted.....the little whiners are afraid they will learn something and their brains will explode.

Sparrng is used to determing alertness, confidnace and courage and should always be controled. (you souldn't have dogs lunging at each other) No sparring breeds are Manchesters, Jack Russell and Parson Russell. There may be other non-sparring breeds also

iveprovenit: I think your problem will be staying alive long enough to give your facts on sparring. Though I doubt that most of the imbeciles have heard of sparring to be able to make an imbecilic answer. You may be disappointed.
From what I know, sparring is mostly a terrier thing, though I believe that Chihuahuas can also be sparred. Pack terriers (i.e., Dandies) and bull-and-terriers (i.e., AmStaff and Staffie Bull) are never sparred.

The purpose is to assist in picking out the best dog.
Love this quote:
"Proper behavior is actually dominant behavior, and seems very low-key, even disinterested, in the dominant dog. The dominant dog will take an assessing glance or two at the other dog, and then turn partly away, essentially saying to the other dog that it is beneath notice. This can often provoke a fit of rage in the dog so spurned, and at that point the dominant dog should, of course, not ignore the challenge, but the dog initiating the fight is most often the less dominant of the pair. "
This is basic DOG BEHAVIOR 101- the dominant dog doesn't start fights... he doesnt HAVE to.

I would imagine the Bulldog breeds? I know sparring is used in Terrier groups. Its to determine dominance or who has the most dominant drive without going nuts. Kinda like snubbing the other dogs. I really dont know much else about it. My dogs are not expected to do this.
Perhaps I will learn something?

I know that the reason for sparring is to see them at their best, totally attent. But I don't know which breeds are not to be sparred. I believe a parson russel terrier is one, but I'm not sure.

Wow! I had absolutely no idea what dog sparring was. I thought you were actually talking about putting 2 Terriers in the ring to rumble.
I just read up on it and it is quite interesting! Thanks for posting.
