My college is offering 25 people the chance to spend a month in London to do an internship with different companies. Ranging from "Shots"( a magazine over there), to numerous PR companies, a film production company, and many other things.

It costs $5k, and I have to submit my application before January 18.

I'm getting 4 majors. Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and Japanese(I want to be a translator). I will have to transfer from my current school to get three of these degrees however. I think it would be great for my resume to have this international internship on it. I can take out a student loan for it.

What do you think? Should I apply?

onegaisha,

Most of the companies that they are offering a job with are international companies with offices all over the world. So I could work with the company's international department, and see how translators work. How they get documents in from Italy, France, Japan, etc. and what the process is for translating it into English which is one outlook for my occupation. Or vice versa, how they have to translate documents before sending them to international offices.

Andy, we get weekends off and 3 days(weekdays) off in the month. Also, we have the nights to do whatever we want.

They're also schedueling(sp...I can never spell that word right) trips to like Windsor Palace, and a bunch of other castles and stuff! UGH! I am so excited I'm filling out my application right now!

The $5k pays for: Airfare, a months rent for an apartment in one of the following areas (Bayswater, Marble Arch, Earls Court or Islington), "travel cards", hop on and hop off passes (busses and subways??) A trip to the British Museum, a trip to Paris, health insurance, some dinners, trips to Dover and Canterbery Cathedrals, day trips to Oxford and Cambridge, a tour of the globe theater, trip to Hampton Court, we have "traditional tea time" at Brown's Cafe, A trip to Christ Church College, another theater trip, (Windsor Castle, as I said before), trip to Tower of London, and then return home (with a bunch of other stuff to fill in the time.

Is this an unpaid internship? Most companies in the States will pay for your room & board and pay you for your work. The $5K price tag sounds like a bit of a scam to me. Research your other options, maybe you'll find a better opportunity to intern abroad.

Go with the flow!

If you think you might like to do it - apply. It's only a month and if you gain nothing else you will have met new people and seen a few of the sights and entertainments that London has to offer.

It's a dangerous thing, stepping out your door...

You step into a road and if you don't keep your feet there is no telling where you might be swept off to. (Bilbo Baggins)

Any chance you get to go see the world is a good one! Go for it, in a few years you'll be old, have kids and a job and everything else pinning you down to where you are. Go see what there is to see.

Take your time getting your majors--this opportunity may not be available in the future, so I would do the internship.

I mean, I am in my 40's and still going to college--I think I am finally getting somewhere.

So, yeah, your language majors will still be waiting for you when you get back.

ps--Take me w/ you! I wanna go to England so badly!

Certainly. Get a fresh outlook on life away from your really insular and closeted US existence. Get a passport, get a life! Welcome to the EU!
