I have a Bichon Frise and a Shih Tzu. they are both great breeds of dogs, although you should do a search on a dog that fits your life style. I would go to a breeder or a shelter to get a dog, sometimes your local shelter won't have the breed you are looking for. hope this helped

EDIT: my shih tzu is very good with children, it all depends on how you socialize your dog, my sisters boyfriend has a golden who attacks other dogs and has bitten him, me and his niece so breed temperament is NOT a sure guarantee.

Well first off u should really check the shelter thats where i got my dog.. And havent u heard that if u save a dog the dog will be the best dog youve had and most likely always protect u even though it's small. But if u did want to get a pure bred dog with papers i would find out the breeds that are normaly sold near where u live.. Also before u decide the breed you want u should read up on some dogs that u really like.. For ex. if u just picked a dog because if was cute that wouldnt be to smart because what is that dog was to hyper for u or was to mean. U should pick a dog that is a good family dog! pick a dog that best fits u and if u do end up getting 1 from the pound ask if u can play with it first and see if u like it epecially if its an adult or not a pure bred..

Breeds I would pick from-
yorkie
chihuahua
french bulldog
cocker spaniel
westie
beagle
boston terrier
cavalier king charles spaniel
daxhshund
jack russell
papillon
poodle
pug
shih tzu
MUTT!
and there much more!

Well have fun picking out a great dog! I love dogs!!

Small dogs tend to be more one person dogs and not always good with little kids because the little kids think ohh a dog my size and can start mauling it. I would get a dog from a shelter and you should get a dog for your life style. Some times you can get a dog from a shelter and keep them for a while and see if it works out (some breeders might tell you too that to bring them back if you change your mine) if you don't get a dog from a shelter you can look through the newspaper for listings. What kind? well you should look at the dogs temperment and personality not really the breed of dog. So you should look into to this before you just pick a dog at random

Hi There
How Cool And How Lucky are you getting a small puppy for Christmas I assume??
Well OK here is my opinion I am a breeder of Pomeranian's and Yorkshire Terriers and I think they are the best breeds of small dogs
If you are to watch all the reality TV shows on MTV you will see all the kids are carrying around little Yorkies and Poms and also Maltese but the most popular I have seen is Yorkie's
They are small they are so funny they have the most hilarious personalities they are silly and they think they are such big bullies and they are so protective of there owners and they are so loyal to there owner
You can just have so many years of love and fun from a Yorkie
So in case you haven't researched the breed check them out and see if that is a breed you would like to have
I know both my daughters have chosen a Pup from different Litters and they each have one and My Youngest has one of each she also has a Pomeranian who is so tiny but she also loves her Yorkie
So research the breed and see what you come up with and good Luck to you
Please keep us Updated on what you decide and get
Happy Holidays to You and Your Family
Respectfully Yours
Anne

How small. I am a HUGE fan of the Boykin Spaniel. They are the state dog of South Carolina. I have one and her name is Dixie. They weigh full grown about 30 lbs. They are still pretty small though and they are good if you like to go for walks outside or curl up on the couch inside. Another good dog would be a cockapoo....Cocker Spaniel/Poodle mix. They are small cute and fluffy and would be a great addition to a family. Research dogs and see what dog suits you and your lifestyle the best. Also, talk to your mom and dad about what the budget is for the dog because if they don't want to spend a lot of money your best bet would probably be a shelter. Small dogs have a tendency to be pretty expensive. Congrats on the upcoming puppy purchase! I know you will really enjoy getting to know your new friend :)

You really need to do some research as noone can say without knowing you or what you expect to be able to do with a dog.
Fro example a Jack Russel is a very hyper dog and needs a lot of attention and excercise or they can become destructive,
Chihuahuas are a dog that can pick it's owner so it may not actually take to you even if it's gotten for you, they are known for low blood sugar and knee problems.
Poodle are pretty good but need daily grooming and excercise
These are just a few examples. I will say that Shihtzus are not good with kids and would strongly suggest against one.
You can look at akc.org and get some ideas of what you might be interested in and then research each breed.
Another suggestion is a shelter but beware they often come iwth many issues that can be hidden.
I would suggest gettting from a breeder that worms their pups at 2,4,6,8 and 10 weeks and vaccinates at 6.9,and 12 weeks.

Definitely check your local shelters & rescues (www.petfinder.com will show some of the available animals, but may not be all of them). They often have small dogs that come in.

My favorite small breeds are:
- Boston Terrier
- Schipperke
- Papillon

i have miniature schnauzers. they don't have to be groomed very often, don't bark alot, but they do cost about $300 IF you get a purebred registered. i would suggest getting a beagle because they are exactly like a mini. schnazuer-little grooming, little barking, but unlike a mini. schnauzer, they don't cost as much! Good luck and Merry Christmas!
