First Merry Christmas,
Your problem is very easy to be solved.
As you said you need a software to convert your avi files into dvd format.
I suggest you download ConvertXtoDVD, it is my favorite
It will convert your video files to the dvd format readable by all standard dvd players, then burn automatically to DVD!
it is easy to use, fast and it works! give it a try, you'll love it
1. Download ConvertXtoDVD here:
http://www.burner-software.com/AVI-to-DVD-Converter/AVI-DivX-XVid-to-DVD.php?exact=sa_ConvertXtoDVD
It can convert any video file.. like wmv, mpeg, asf, mp4, avi to dvd
2. Add or drag-n-drop as many video files as the DVD can handle
3. Insert blank DVD
4. Click "Convert"
5. Enjoy watching those video files on your home DVD player! =)
Good Luck

Hi.
firstly....here is a link to a cracking piece of software.
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_encoders/vso_divxtodvd_free.cfm
About it....It converts all 'avi' files and more to 'DVD' format.
It is freeware and a full working programme.
A few pointers....when your 'avi' file is converted it is automatically saved in a folder called divxtodvd, created by your software. (normally found in my documents folder) Here it is ready to be copied to a DVD. I use roxio 'DVD' copier for this.. The speed of the conversion is dependant on your computer specifications.
The original 'avi' file after conversion is still in its original location....'so'..the copy of it is your converted file in divxto dvd folder..
Your raw 'avi' original can also be watched on your computer, using 'vlc'. This is also a free...freeware download.

Hope this is useful imformation for you

There are many programs out there...but the best of them all is a product by Sony....called Vegas! you can use others like Nero and Pinnacle Studio but I think that if you get the VEGAS and DVD Architect from sony...you are well on your way!

Winavi is as easy as it gets, but the above is pretty good.
Loads to choose from, but in a full version of Nero it's part of the bundle.
