What do you think about the argument for rape being used for pro-choice advocates? I understand a woman's position if she were to get pregnant as the consequence of a rape and as a woman could not imagine what it would be like to be in that position, for sure. However, the statistics are the a raped woman who gets pregnant due to said rape is 4.7%. Why do we base the whole on a fraction of actual pregnacies? This is not even taking into consideration women who may choose to have the child and keep/adopt out the baby. So it cannot even be said that 4.7% of abortions are due to rape because we cannot know how many women opt out of abortion in that circumstance I know there is also the possibility of the women's life being in danger. In this day and age with medical technology; while it certainly DOES happen, it does not even come close to the 4.7% that the rapes do. So, how do we rectify the 90% (and this is a very generous figure) of abortion due to birth control?

not abortion due to birth control, but using abortion as birth control.

How about this. If you aren't pregnant than it is none of your business.

Actually, the whole rape argument gives us a keen insight into the antichoice mind. Some want to permit an exception for cases of rape. Others do not. Let's look at that:

Those that would grant an exception for rape clearly don't believe that the fetus really deserves protection, because otherwise they would oppose abortion, even in case of rape. Clearly, these people, in attempting to appear compassionate, are showing what they in fact want to do is punish consensual sex.

In the other case, those who would criminalize abortion, even in the case of rape, clearly have no regard for the woman at all. And there are a couple of answers to this question that prove that is in fact the case: evidence the creep who thinks women should die rather than abort. Sadly, this attitude is far too common.

What both of these viewpoints share in common is utter disrespect for women. It is interesting to note that they usually refer to the woman as a "mother" (implying that is the only legitimate role she has on Earth). This is repugnant. Not only is it disrespectful, it is dangerous for our society. Ours is a society based upon legal equality for all. Those who want to criminalize abortion do not fundamentally believe in legal equality.

They will tell you they do, and they will say that the fetus is not being treated equally, but the simple fact, they are asking for fetuses to be given a right no born person has --- the right to survive at the expense of someone else's health or life.

I believe that is a decision that the women have to make. Abortion often stems from the factors that the mother does simply not want to be in that condition and they still have a legal right to terminate the pregnancy or keep it.

It is easy for someone to sit and judge a woman for wanting abortion but we have no right too. It is not okay for society to interfere, interject, project or enforce an opinion on someone that has their own views on what will make them have better in life. I say this because I don't see pro-choice really doing anything for the kids that are already in the system I don't see them move a foot and picket houses where children(that are already out) are being abused or murdered. I see them taking the easy, less difficult route which is picking on women seeking abortions and judging them.

i think that if the mummy and father cant have the money for to have the baby or the baby is by using rape its certainly as much as the mummy and father. eg a 15 year old female raped by ability of a instructor or something can not have the money for to have a baby. its too no longer common on her and her destiny. yet i do believe that the mummy has the alternative extra beneficial than the daddy. shes the guy who could be caught with the infant if the daddy vanishes. each and every so often having the abortion is extra effectual off because of the fact the little you may still desire to be very depressing if the mummy and father cant have the money for to take care right. its all as much as the mummy and father

I think rape is only one of the reasons that abortion needs to stay a safe and legal choice. Incest involving the underage, medical life/death situations for the mother and failure of properly used birth control are others.

I've always been pro-choice and I always will be because even though I would never have one myself, I will not tell others what is best for them. My conscience should not dictate to anothers. Keep things safe and legal and if you do not want to avail yourself of them then don't.

I agree that abortion shouldn't be used as birth control. I just don't believe you understand what abolishing the right to choose would be used for. Woman have the right to dictate whether or not they want to carry a pregnancy through. You said it yourself some choose adoption...etc. It's the right to choose we are all obligated to defend.

I don't think rape is very commonly used as a justification -- just an example of where a woman needs to have an abortion through no "fault" of her own; that is, she didn't have the chance to use the pill, etc.

The pro-choice philosophy ultimately just bases itself on personal freedom and personal autonomy.

I have a unique perspective on abortion most people do not have. The baby/child's perspective.

Had abortion been legal the year I was born, I would have been aborted under Dr. advice due to my mother's health condition. His extact words to her were "you will not live to raise this child". She remained partial paralysed after my birth due to a massive stroke (while I was taken c-section during which I almost died) and died later. My father not having the ability to raise me I was shuttled from family member to family member until I was eventually placed in foster care (where I shuffled around again). While I am grateful for my life, chances are it would have been better for everyone involved (including myself) if my mother could have obtained a safe, medical pregnancy termination.

I have been diagnosed with the same immune disorder as my mother and was told by doctors to never get pregnant. Even with the best medical care I would stand less then a 50% of delivering a live baby without the same consquences as my mother.

Simple fact, birth control fails (the most reliable is only 97% effect in studies), rape happens, incest happens, illness happens. While I personally do not agree with abortion for me (I am a Catholic), it is not my right to force someone to have to make this horrible gut wrenching decision or to stop them from doing what they need to do to protect their life or sanity. That is in no way the most "pro-life" affirming thing to do.

You want to eliminate a great number of abortions provide good healthcare, provide sexual education, provide research, provide assistance, provide better protection for women. This in the end is the most life affirming thing you can do.

If you wish to eliminate abortion, eliminate the need for abortion. Don;t presume to begin to tell me anything about abortion, the ramifications or the consequences of it being legal or the justification for it being illegal. I know them as well as anyone could possibly know them. I have lived them. Ihave spent hours and hours (more then anyone else on here I am sure) contemplating both sides, how my mother's life would have been different, how my it affected my life, all of the ramifications and because of the situation I was able to think about it going with out any preconcieved notions about how it should be legal or illegal, whether it was really right or wrong, just as what is.

"pro-lifers" can give me all the thumbs down they wish they never had to walk a mile in mine or my mother's shoes.

Edit: The answer below me is one of the most unChristian views and decidely unCatholic theology I have ever heard. And virtually disgusting to me that someone would say that it is a cross to bear from God (bordering on unCatholic, ours is a God that meters out love not brutality, injustice and burden. You want that God go become a fundamentalist) or that a woman who dies in labor is somehow exhalted (unCathollic).

EDIT Evan you are cruel individual and think someday you might have to tell your wife, daughter, sister, granddaughter even though she will die (or she has been brutally raped) she has no excuse for not having the baby and then watch them die or suffer. Also seeing as how YOU will never have to give up your life or carry a child of rape or incest how can you even presume to know or presume to make the statement you do. You aren't the one who has to live it or be the child that has to live with it.

Also what YOU are describing is LATE term abortion (which is usually only in the case of baby and mother dying, so yes, of course, THAT is a statement supporting LIFE, lets let them both die. !@#$%) and not legal for most purposes.

it is a silly argument.

if the fetus were a person it would have rights. if the fetus had rights it could hardly be blamed for the fault of its parents.

the fetus is not a person. it does not have rights.

[edit]

i only ever see this argument used by anti-choicers as a possible 'exception' (which you then decide not to allow).

there can be no 'exceptions' with abortion. it is always the woman's right to choose.

please give your sources. Since only 1 in 4 rapes are reported, the statistic that only 4.7% of pregnancy are caused by rape is clearly incorrect and much lower then the actual number.

Also since God can trust me with choice (freewill) who are you or anyone to say that God is wrong?
Anti-Choice = Anti-Freewill= belief God made a mistake

I believe abortion is wrong regardless of the situation. Rape, incest, you name it. Regardless of whether or not a woman has a baby out of rape, she's going to remember that horrible act for the rest of her life. Killing the baby isn't going to take that pain away.

I see absolutely no excuse for drilling a hole in a baby's skull, sucking out her brain, crushing her skull, pulling her body apart little by little, and sliding her out and into a trashcan. No excuse whatsoever.
