Well....people will tell you "no" all day long, but long time breeders will tell you that the chocolates to tend to be a little more hyper than the other two colors (three, if you include the fox red, my personal favorite, which is considered by AKC to be just a shade of yellow). Yes, you can have individual calm chocolates and you can have crazy yellows and blacks, but IN GENERAL (which is what I think you were asking *G*) the chocolates tend to be the most hyper. Granted, what will determine your pups temperament the most in the parents and the socilization and training they recieve. A lot of people tend to forget that they are a working breed, and are high-energy. They also like to eat things they shouldn't! LOL We see the most labs for foreign body surgery, with goldens a close second!

"Do they have a distinctive difference in personality, temperance or obedience or something?"
The only time that becomes true is when coat color was the only consideration when doing the breeding. Remember that form will always follow function. So if the coat color is the only function that is being bred for, what is holding the rest of the dog together?

You mean like my lab with a golf ball in his gut, for the third time?

There are also French, Mexican, Canadian, even Cuban Labs. Place of origin is not the difference. There are both FIELD bred and SHOW bred Labs in England and the US.
A show lab is a show lab, there is now a one inch difference in the height requirement, but that is it. I can easily show you field bred labs from both countries that you would swear were litter mates.
So don't buy into Woodhavens "creative marketing"

I have had a black lab and known many other colors and the only difference I could tell was the color. No different than having a brindle Great Dane as opposed to a Blue or Harl

no other than color. I will say each pup will have it's own personality and no matter what color just like kids some are easier to train than others.
If you aren't use to having a lab I would suggest getting teh pup into puppy classes and then obedience classes as soon as possible.

Labs make great dogs. All labs should have good personalities, temperment and be obedient if properly loved and trained. Color shouldn't matter.

I'm not sure if the colors dictate a distinction, but there are two different types of Labs - English and American. Here's a website that offers some explanation; http://woodhavenlabs.com/english-american.html
