in height?

How tall are they by the way? Are there any other dogs that are taller than Great Danes?

Irish Wolfhounds are the largest/tallest dogs.

At one time, the only people allowed to won them in England were Royalty, Nobility, and Poets :)

Great Danes are the largest breed of dog but I think Irish Wolfhounds area actually the tallest breed. The height of a Great Dane will vary a lot by the breedline....I have a 2 year old female that comes from very large stock and she is 37 inches tall at the shoulders where she should be on average about 29-33.

No, Irish Wolfhounds are the tallest breed.

Dane Breed Standard: The male shall not be less than 30 inches at the shoulders, but it is preferable that he be 32 inches or more, providing he is well proportioned to his height. The female shall not be less than 28 inches at the shoulders, but it is preferable that she be 30 inches or more, providing she is well proportioned to her height. Danes under minimum height must be disqualified.

Wolfhound Breed Standard: The minimum height and weight of dogs should be 32 inches and 120 pounds; of bitches, 30 inches and 105 pounds; these to apply only to hounds over 18 months of age. Anything below this should be debarred from competition. Great size, including height at shoulder and proportionate length of body, is the desideratum to be aimed at, and it is desired to firmly establish a race that shall average from 32 to 34 inches in dogs, showing the requisite power, activity, courage and symmetry.

Great Danes are pretty tall but there are larger.

Irish Wolfhounds
Giant English Bull Mastiffs
Afghans

So although they are pretty big they are just part or the class of dog called "Giants". Kinda obvious that one.

I believe the Dane's are the tallest but pound for pound a Mastiff rules. We have a neighbor with a pair of Mastiff's when he walks them people stop in cars to look. The are huge and yet these two because of being raised and trained are just big babies. One weighs in at 162lbs, the other 156 and neither is fat. The owner and them run 5 miles a day just make sure they keep their muscles toned and they don't get fat. An overweight dog is being killed with what you might perceive as okay. Every extra pound a dog carries shortens their life, just like people that are to heavy.

The irish wolf hound. Is the tallest dog. Look it up. Some have been known to get to be 3 feet at the shoulders.

They were bred to be guard dogs yet they are not the aggressive type. They were used to hunt large game such as deer, elk, boar, and even wolves.
