The 20GB and 60GB PS3s had 97% PS2 compatibility.. (both are now discontinued)
The 80GB (and European 60GB) have 73% PS2 compatibility (which will improve over time with software updates)
The 40GB has 0% PS2 compatibility..
The issue is the first PS3s had most of the guts of a PS2 inside of them.. later, when they came out with the second round of PS3s they removed the PS2 Emotion Engine (CPU) to save money.. they still had the GPU and some RAM to support PS2 games using software emulation.. now with the newest PS3 (40GB) they took the rest of the PS2 hardware out so it can't play PS2 games at all.. Sony has stated that PS2 compatibility isn't important to PS3 owners so they would rather save the $27 that the chips cost them..
All PS3s have compatability with many PS1 games through software emulation..
Good luck..

Some of the games, I heard that some of the PS2 games playing on PS3 the controllers wont work, there are a few bugs still out there. I
also you have to make sure you get the correct gig to play the PlayStation 2 games.
I would wait if you intend on buying one til later in 08 , for several reasons, most of the glitches will be fixed, also price will drop down, and it will have a better library then it does now.

The 60gb and 20gb play about 99% of all PS1 and PS2 game because that system has the EE chip in it. The 80gb only plays about 80-85% because the chip was removed and it uses software emulation to play them. The 40gb plays PS1 games but not PS2 games.

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version. 40GB doesn't support SACD.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

Only the discontinued 60GB version will be fully compatible, the 40GB doesn't play PS1 or PS2 games and the 80GB will play most PS2 but not PS1 games.

PS3 games will work from all round the world with any PS3.
PS1 and PS2 games are locked into the original region of the machine.
eg.
UK PAL PS3 will play UK PAL PS1 and PS2 games but all PS3 games.
USA NTSC PS3 will play USA NTSC PS1 and PS2 games but all PS3 games.
JAP NTSC PS3 will play JAP NTSC PS1 and PS2 games but all PS3 games.
I own a UK PAL PS3 and have tried USA and JAP PS1 and PS2 games on it and none will work - (I have original imported games as both my PS1 and PS2 are imported consoles one from JAP one from USA)
