I love the holidays. Let me try to sort of counter what you've said.
1. People will eat too much-Yeah, but there are so many yummy foods around. Things people don't make year around. And people want to share the good things with other people-so that's always cool.
2. Drink too much-Well, I don't mind having a cocktail now and then. It's some times nice to see people behave in a different way then we've seen them before. It's like seeing the boss relax a little. You might just find out that they have a wicked sense of humor.
3. Spend too much, then complain-I think people actually like giving gifts-that's why they do it. And complaining about it is a way to bond with other people. It's like talking about the weather-just a little thing that people do to give us something to discuss.
4. Depression, Suicide and crime increase-I think because of those things we need to reach out more to other people. Just don't think about what your friends and family are getting for the holidays (or yourself) but try to make someone else's holiday brighter. You can adopt a family, volunteer at a soup kitchen, donate to toys for tots, give to a worthy charity. Almost anything to help others out will make you feel better and get a true idea about what the holidays are all about.
5. Not taking work seriously-well, tis the season. I love the atmosphere at work during the holidays. We bond more, talk more and do more fun things. We get paid time off (most of us, anyway) Christmas bonuses and Christmas parties-what's not to love?
I love the holday and I hope yours is a very happy one this year that makes you change your mind about them.
Happy Holidays!

What you said holds true for some people...the excessive drinking, road rage, etc. but I find once Dec. 23rd rolls around I actually look forward to it even though prior to that I get all stressed out and I absolutely hate shopping! The increase in suicide and depression is because it is so hyped up and if you find yourself alone on Christmas it seems like the end of the world...which it isn't. Best to just consider it another day if that is the case. Drinking too much and eating too much is just an excuse because "it is Christmas"...I don't overindulge because I know that come January I will pay the price by extra weight I don't want or need!

I love the reason we celebrate, which is the birth of Christ. But I sure don't enjoy most of the stress, demands, emotional turmoil that goes along with what we have turned Christmas into. It all takes away from the joy of what we should be thinking about. We suddenly need lots more money for gifts, time for decorating and entertaining. We put such a burden on ourselves to be and do extraordinary things regardless of our financial situations, our time restraints, our social abilities. If we could just keep it simple and joyful, it would be a time to remember, not a time to dread.

I LOVE the holidays! I've been smiling all day long today! I can't wait till Christmas! The holidays are what you make out of them. You can control what you spend and how much you eat. It is about family, friends, giving and love. Not about how much you spend and how much weight you gain. I'm giving a present to my local animal shelter and I can't wait to give it to them!

While I agree with everything you've said, I personally love the holidays. It's just my hubby and I, it's really low stress. And it's the perfect excuse to spend the day cooking a great meal together.

Well Scrooge, I guess it is what you make of it. See I take it nice and easy, I call out from work and do my Christmas shopping while everyone else is at work, therefore it is less packed and I feel like I am giving myself a treat by not working...As for work, well all work and no play make Scrooge a VERY dull person...

I like this month as much as any other, though I'm more a summer person.
I like summer better, yes.

I am not big on Thanksgiving, I could live without that mundane holiday.
I enjoy Christmas though.
