The short answer, the sponsors who are paying the bills think that a well known open wheel driver is a better marketing opportunity than mid-level Cup or Busch (Nationwide) driver. Most NASCAR fans would rather see familiar faces getting a chance (including me) but who's to say that the marketing people even know much about NASCAR? Probably they don't.

Yes it is a Shame. Yes it is all About the Money Bring in a big Name whether he can drive or not!!!! A fine Example Sam Hornish Jr. tried to qualify 6 or 7 times last year and FAILED now he gets Kurt Bush"s points and a 6 race making the field Guarantee. While Roger Penske sits back and Laughs while Raking in the Dough and Busch Series drivers cant get a ride even though the Have drove Stock Cars for Years!!!!! Gotta Make the Owners and Sponsors the BIG BUCKS!!!!!

I agree, Boris Said does deserve a full time ride, I just can not understand it...But then Nascar is all about $$$$, and politics... They figure these Indy Car Stars bring more clout with them as they are a familiar face..and yes, we will get Ashley Judd'd (darios wife) to death next yr,...Theres some really good busch/nationwide drivers out there that will have to spend another yr or 2 there before they get a Cup ride.. Dan Wheldon has already said he wants to come to Nascar in a yr or so, Thats Ganassi's IRL driver, If I were Reed Sorenson I'd drive my tail off next yr, so he doesn't get canned for Weldon...

Not only is it about the money, but also bringing in more fans. By grabbing up the top IRL and F1 drivers, Nascar is hoping to take some of their fans with them. People will want to see how their favorite driver does in this venue. Hence, more viewers. Since ratings have been lower in the last 2 years, this is a new strategy to raise them. I think Nascar may have nudged these teams into hiring these famous drivers. This article you shared leaves me with no other explanation. It makes no sense to drop experienced, talented drivers, except to help Nascar and to pick up more sponsors.

I wholly agreee with the author of that article. The drivers need to prove themselves in the truck and former Busch series first. Just because they can drive ANY kind of race car does not mean they can drive a Cup car.
But, we have all seen what money does to Nascar... the Chase, ESPN coverage, the COT.... need I go on?

It also has to do with contract obligations, a sponsor's willingness to back certain drivers, and of course the decision of the driver to move up and to where he is moving to.
If I were having good success in the Bush series and the only offer was to a team with little to no success in the Sprint series I would probably stay where I was and wait longer. I am of the firm belief that everyone has the right to race no matter where they came from. Apparently these drivers are good salesman as the have sold their new teams on their talent on the track. I wish them good luck. I also hope that if driver in the Bush series want to move up that they are able to someday as well.

While I don't see the presence of open wheelers as a bad thing (it may settle the old "Who's better?" question once and for all), it is disappointing to see good racers rideless (Raines, Stremme).
That said, the sponsors may find themselves disappointed if their car/driver doesn't qualify and get camera time.
A good possibility for backlash there.
Hopefully, 2008 will settle this argument.
Foyt and Andretti (Mario, that is) never got real serious about NASCAR.

Yes, it's all about the buck!
I know you don't think much of anything I say, but remember this, all of those open wheel drivers are not going to make it in Nascar! It won't take many of them failing to change things back around. Like you say it's about the money!
Happy Holidays!!

The one that frustrates me the most is BORIS SAID! He has a cult following and can bring sponsors to the table. He has proven he can drive superspeedways well, and a road course is a no brainer. He is a true class act, that seems to always get shafted.
