I just read that Eid al-Adha commemorates the 'prophet Abraham's' willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail, on God's command. Is this 'prophet Abraham' the same Abraham recognized by Jews and Christians in the Old Testament?

The first three answers are way off.

You are correct, the Abraham of the Qur'an is the exact same Abraham of the Bible. And yes, Eid Al-Adha does commemorate the struggle that Abraham faced when he obeyed God's command for him to sacrifice his own son.

i am muslimah and yes that's true, our hajj and eid AL adha is all about prophet Ibrahim(pbuh). and he is the same prophet recognized by Jew and Christians.
the Qur'an in six verses (2:130, 2:135, 3:95, 4:125, 6:161, 16:123) preach following the "path of Abraham" .. which implies returning to the original path again (the one which Jews and Christians deviated from it) the main trunk of the tree.
i even had a Q about him because we mention him every day in our prayers.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AqIQvRGpE.vDiLr9q8gTZVnsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071217102333AA03Oav

Off course yes. I think due references have already been given above.

Not only Ibraahim (Abraham) Qur'an confirms for many other prophets from previous holy scriptures...

Allah says:

And We gave him Ishaque (Isaak) and Yaqub (Jacob) We showed the path to all of them and showed the path to Nuh (Noah) before them, and of his progeny, to Daud (David) and Suleman (Soloman) and Ayub and Yusuf (Joseph) and Musa (Moses) and Haroon (Haron), and thus We recompense the righteous….
…And to Zakaria (Zacharia) and Yahya (John) and Isa (Jesus) and Ilyas (Elias). These are all entitled to be Our near ones (righteous)…
…And to Ismail and Yasa (Elisha) and Yunus (Jonah) and Lot, And to each one We preferred above all in his time…
…And also to some of their fathers and their progeny and some of their brothers, and We chose them and showed them the straight path. (Qur’an 6:84 to 87)

Sure is.

Its scary how a doctrinal dispute thousands of years old is still used by the faithful to kill one another today....

"Abraham, loved Sarah, she mothered the chosen people!!!"

'NO!, Abraham loved Haggar, she mothered the chosen people!!!'

"thats it I'm chopping off your head"

'you don't scare me, I'll use my nukes to erase you from the map'
