You are assuming that only atheists beget atheists, and that no one born into another religion will become atheist.
Considering how many of the atheists on here come from Catholic backgrounds, I'd say that the more deeply Orthodox someone's background is, the more modern education is going to expose the holes and inconsistencies in that belief, and bring about more rational atheists.
So the world of reason, enlightenment and scientific progress will survive as long as we have reason, education, and scientific progress.
Unfortunately, the US Govt seems to be intent on wiping out at least two of those three.

Yes, well ironically Evolution favors those who do not believe in Darwin. That has always amused me.
But just because someone was born into a religious family, does not garentee that they will retain the beliefs of their parents. Alternatives to Fundamentalist Christianity are on the rise. Just because you don't produce offspring biologically, doesn't mean your ideas won't produce offspring. I am optimistic. I think, if the idea is strong, it will survive. People want to be free, they want to think for themselves. And the Truth -- the Scientific, Rational Truth -- will win out in the long run.
And the world's problems aren't caused by Religion -- they are caused by People. People just like to use Religion as an excuse.

I wouldn't worry about it. Even though religious people have more babies, a larger percent of those babies are rejecting religion for atheism. since atheism isn't a genetic factor reproduction isn't necessary, intelligence breeds atheism. Its like homosexuality, since only heterosexuals can have sex, you would think that there would be no gay people, yet here we all are in greater numbers then ever before.
The right will always take its place in society. We use the wrong as breeders for our own purposes.

Its all a matter of education and science.
Just because kids are indoctrinated with religion doesn't mean they stay that way. Many of us are proof of that.
If humans continue to rely on education, Atheism will continue to flourish and grow in popularity.
There is a Reason that such a high percentage of Highly educated scientists and doctors are Atheists, and it isn't a conspiracy.

Atheists have kids, although they may well have a lower fertility rate. At any rate, then the current trend would continue: people are born into religious homes, then lose religion as adults. I'm not too worried about fertility rates.

Not necessarily. Kids don't always turn out the way their parents want. Look at me. I'm a liberal Deist, feminist, living w/ my BF out of wedlock, childfree woman. My parents are conservative Catholics!
However, it can go the other way. Madelyn Murray O'Hair's son became a flaming fundie.
My point? Kids aren't as programmable as their parents like to think.

I'm not worried, especially when you consider that the most "conservative" religious people of today would've been considered the nuttiest of "liberals" 100 years ago. Progress happens in spite of all the combined efforts of all the religious troglodytes to halt it.
The Bible was used to argue against women's suffrage and civil rights for black people, just as it's used today to persecute gay people. The Bible was used to show that the earth was the center of the universe, just as it's used today to show that "I ain't come from no monkey." Sorry, trogs, but you really WILL have to admit your mistakes eventually. You could do yourselves a favor by getting in on the ground floor on some of these issues.

We have a very low birth rate, and still growing as a percentage of the population. They will always need science no matter how much they dislike it. I expect the trend to accelerate in the US just like it has in Europe.
