You can't get round it - it's the law.

Any vehicle privately imported from outside the E.U. will be subject to import duty, V.A.T. brokerage fees, an S.V.A. test and registration fees.

It's much cheaper to buy a used one over here...

HMCE will want their share of the vehicles declared shipping value. I don't see how you can avoid paying them. It has to be landed somewhere and go through customs procedures and I'm not aware of any exemptions - unless you were a registered charity or museum perhaps where you might get a lower rate or claim a VAT refund, but as a private importer, your chances are probably nil to non-existant.

You can't. Cars sold in the UK have duty and VAT included in the price so you must expect to pay same when importing.

Only used cars can be brought in that way. They have a time/mileage minimum for the car to be considered used. You *may* have trouble insuring it.

Plus the steering wheel will be on the wrong side!

Only by smuggling it and then not registering it and driving it only on private land away from prying eyes. Good luck!
