There is a particular sequence of events for starting the engines on a commercial aircraft. There is no "key" for the ignition as is on a car. I agree with Miiiikee...I too know the sequence but the general public does not have a "need to know" what it is.

There are no keys (although the flight deck door can be locked, it's not usually done while the aircraft is parked).
You just turn the battery on and start the APU. Then bring the APU generator online and you will have enough air and power to start the engines. You don't need external power to do this.
The average person will not get very far (not even a simulator geek) and you would be caught in no time.
I heard a story a few years ago (pre 9/11) where a couple of youths snuck into an Airbus A320 at Montreal's airport (can't remember if it was Dorval or Mirabel). Anyways they managed to set off the engine fire extinguishers and do some damage trying to start it. Then they went to another Airbus and blew its fire extinguishers too!

No, just go into the cockpit and start up the aircraft as per the check list.
Saying that, when an airline collects a brand new aircraft from Boeing in Everett. A ceremonial key to the aircraft is handed over!

smaller single engine piston or turboprops have a key that goes into the magneto switch. In a commercal airliner you just turn on Alt Battery Master ..APU generator.......Engine fuel flow -cross feed-Ignition ...of course if anybody tried to do this they would be tassered and hualed out of the aircraft into a third world prison

well basically, you just enter the cockpit and turn on the battery, push the standby power to AUTO and turn on the APU. then of course, you go by check list (afterwards a lot of things must be made....like IRS alignment....).
although i don't know if this would work even without exterior power (because the battery should go on without it, and afterwards, you can turn on the APU, which is then your "exterior power", if you want).

To start the engines there are little switches below the throttle quadrant. The control panel controls things like the master battery, lights, etc. Also, it controls the fuel mixtures.

Its more than a matter of pushin the right buttons. Most commercial jets planes have to have an external power source hooked up to be able to start.
