Can I play my regular DVDs on a HDDVD player?

If so does it improve the picture quality of normal DVDs on a HDTV?

At the moment I'm using a normal DVD player with a HDTV and the DVDs don't look as good as they did on my old TV.

Yes HDDVD plays DVDs and upconverts them. Since someone seems to be pushing BluRay here, to be informed on HDDVD vs BluRay you should at least look at the list of movies available on each. BluRay is not "winning" - Xbox has been outselling PS3 5 to 1 since September and just as many studios back HDDVD only as BluRay - Actually only Sony Studios and Disney (by contract) are doing BluRay only. The last I checked HDDVD players were $100+ less than the COMPARABLE BluRay player, not to mention free HDDVD movie incentives.
Some stores would like you to think BluRay is winning by some displays I've seen, but I'm sure it's profit margin related (what isn't) - why more profit for BluRay? Because Sony has the prices jacked up and it will only get worse if they "win".
