The Springfield Armory M1A, the civilian version of the M14, comes in .308(7.62NATO) only.
The Springfield Armory M1 Garand,
is avalible in .308 OR .30-06.
The M1A/M14 was an improved version of the M1 Garand using a detachable 20 round magazine. Although very similar in appearance and operating principal (and name as well), they are completely different rifles.

No one offers the M1A (m14) in 30-06. I think you are meaning to say the M1 (Garand) which is available in 30-06 and .308 win.
I have both rifles, the M14 in .308 win. and a couple of the Garands in both .308 and 30-06. First, I like them both. Right now, 308 FMY ammo is really hard to find, but the hunting loads are available, just costly. The 30-06 is very hard to find bulk military surplus ammo for as it isn't used much in the military anymore, but CMP has some bulk ammo ( I think it is greek surplus) at good prices and of course the hunting ammo is readily available. It boils down to personal taste on the caliber, and cost of ammo. Both calibers do a very good job, obvously the "06 has more power due to the larger case, but the .308 is no slacker. At 1000 yards, if you zero the gun for that range, the .308 is just as accurate as the "06, just a little less power. I would not have a problem with either caliber for hunting or survival.
Hope this helped

If you are in reference to the M1A it is chambered only for the 7.62 aka .308 round. If you have one that is marked for a 30-06 you better have a gunsmith look at it and see what is going on.

I've been looking at the M1A since this is one of the rifles I'd like to buy. But unless I'm mistaken Springfield Armory doesn't make them in 30-06, they only come in .308. If there is a 30-06 its probably a rare variant thats been rechambered and will end up costing more money. They do however offer the M1 Garand in 30-06 but thats a different rifle entirely.

The Springfield M-1A is the civilian, semi-auto only version of the U.S. M-14 rifle which is chambered for the 7,62x51NATO (.308 Win) rifle cartridge. NONE have ever been chambered for the .30-06 cartridge, the receiver is too short to accommodate the 63mm .30-06 cartridge case.
This is an EXCELLENT choice of rifles! It is one of the best and most reliable battle rifles ever developed, and inexpensive military surplus ammunition is still plentiful and available from several sources on the net and from catalogs.

The shell casing could desire to have it written on it. If no longer, the calaver represents the diameter of the bullet in inches. a 30 calaber is .3", a .270 = .27". A 7.62 mm is 7.62/25.4=.30". it fairly is no longer common to tell between a 7mm .275", a 270 and a 280. solid success.

This is the civilian version of the M14. The M14 shot the Nato round, 308 7.62 X 51mm I would get one that is a 308, it is your choice if you want one that is a 30-06..... it is a great weapon.... go hear and read about it.....
