Study Sufi mysticism, because that is among the most beautiful, peaceful spiritual practices in the world. It is all about Oneness with Divine Being and letting go of all thought forms that impede the flow of this process.
As for general Islam, I think it is more of a cultural-political thing than the religion itself. Religion itself attracts certain mentalities, no matter what the religion is.

You are right Islam is a wonderful religion.
Muslims believe in One God without any partners attributed to him. The Creator and Sustainer of the worlds.
Islam is a perfect religion. Unlike other religions it teaches about all aspects of life.
Most religions ignore the political and military aspects of life.
Islam talks about this. People take the verses relate to these and misrepresent them. for example
It teaches that if you are being persecuted then you are allowed to take up arms and fight against the persecutors. It goes further to say that when you are fighting make sure you don't harm innocent civilians (women children, old and those who have not picked up arms against you).
I don't see this as violent, do you?

Because all religions are man-made, and thereby influenced by the passions and prejudices of those human beings.
I've pretty much eschewed religion, and simply worship God. Well, I still follow a lot of dictates about living a benevolent life, but I certainly don't try to change anyone to believe the way I do, nor do I judge others for being "different" than me.
I find it frightening that there are some Muslim countries where all citizens have to be Muslim. How obnoxious and fanatical.

Ever read the Koran? It's not exactly a wholesome story. Though to be fair, neither is the Bible, and Christianity went through it's heavy-duty violent period when it was about 1500 years old too.

The violent ones are usually those from third world countries where they are poor and uneducated. They are easily led by those with political ambitions, who can convince them it is ''all in the name of religion''. They are trying to bring a better life for themselves and their families.

Because it can be.
It is a religion that has control over actual countries.
Any religion that actually has power, turns violent. Even Christianity had it's spanish inquisition.
