Isn't that the essence of Christianity: fear of death and eternal torture by the loving god.

As people have pointed out, it is also because they need the idea of a God in their life. A woman told me that she would be "dead in a ditch somewhere" if it wasn't for God. So it is not always fear of hell, but maybe just typical human fears. You are right that there is no black and white, except in people's minds that want things to be that simple.

Even if God would tell me right now that I was going to hell or going to nowhere/dust after I die, I would still live as a Christian because I know it's the best, most meaningful way to live an authentic life of love.
So... I know there are lots of people in the world who follow a religion out of fear, out of avoiding hell. But not everybody. There's lots and lots of middle ground, and we span the gamut of it.

I guess you didn't quote the pertinent Scriptural passage because it would have destroyed your argument " Perfect love casts out fear. -- that was to be the aim of the Christian.
The other fear is the fear of the Judgement and condemantion to Hell, a fear that has its place but is supposed to give way.
You have heard Amazing Grace:
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev’d;
People like you make me scratch my head to the point of bleeding. Of course one starts afraid of Hell. But to stop there !! Maybe that is where you are now. And it galls you.

well I don't believe that way I will explain it this way you might understand: when I get a gift on fathers day I open it with gladness. but the greatest gift is Jesus who gave me a wife and children that gave me the gift on fathers day. same way on my birthday,Christmas and so on. what I'm getting to is that GOD also giving me the greatest gifts Jesus and his promises some of which you have named. but the greatest gift is the one giving the gifts and that is my Heavenly father GOD himself he scent Jesus to pay for my sins because he loves me and yes great gifts do follow but none of them is above GOD he is the reason I want to go to Heaven. all other things he promises is just a bonus.

I am not a Christian due to fear, I used to be a drug addict, lying,stealing,psychopath and praise God that He took me out of that life and gave me life through Jesus Christ not fear, Praise God, and life is so much better, I know there is a God and no one can ever change that

Human Marketing may have tainted organized religions, but that's the product of human corruption, and says nothing about their supposed perfect origins. Fallacious argument.

You are way off on this one, my friend. Belief in hell is rapidly declining. And even people who do still believe it say it is nothing more than "the absence of God." We worship God because we LOVE Him.
