We can make an intelligent assumption by reason not opinion, using the premise that Thomas Aquinas uses, their must have been a prime mover. Time moves forward so when God created the universe he started time from the beginning and will be their when sin is overcome and creation is restored with sin.

I can't speak for religious people. But, as a Christian, the Bible tells us that God created the universe, that's why I believe it.

If we don't know, it's just as plausible as any other explanation.
I believe there was some "Unifying Force", and I choose to call it God.
