I have pretty good eyesight, for far away stuff that is. I already know that I can see better far-sighted than near sighted... I have to squint to read stuff up close, like a book. I love to read but i'm tired of straining my eyes and getting headaches so I thought I would get a pair of reading glasses just for work and reading books. I don't want to get an eye exam though because there is no point. So can I purchase a pair of reading glasses without an exam???

Ok, basically I just want drug store magnifying glasses that just make the words in my books look bigger.... I was told that those kinds of glasses wont hurt my vison... besides I had an eye exam not too long ago and I already know that i'm far sighted

Not necessarily. But if you want to get EXACTLY what you need, it would be smart to get an exam first.

No, you don't have to, but if gettng ready-readers encourages you to skip a regular eye exam it's a very bad idea.

There's lots can go wrong in an eye that *you* wouldn't notice until it's quite advanced.
If you've had a recent eye exam (within the last year) that's a different matter.
(though then if you're that close to needing a reading Rx, and have a trace of distance Rx (far-sighted does not mean perfect distance vision) you should have been given your theoretical Rx as a guide at the least.

Reading glasses do not magnify (all you'd get from a blur, then, would be a big blur)
They shift focus.
In general, don't overdo the strength. The stronger the glasses the closer you can hold things, but the fewer different distances the glasses will work at.
The'yre a cheap quick fix, with all the advantages and drawbacks of that:it's quite rare to have two eyes exactly the same, but the readers assume that, of course,

Eye exams are very important! there is a point for them. Did you know that eye exams can result in the diagnosis of diabetes, brain tumours and other systemic conditions? Eye exams are veryyy important for everyone. I have had one every year since i was 4 years old.

With reading glasses if you want the best quality and power i would definetly go to the Opticians. Otherwise you can just purchase some :)

Take care
