A scrapbook with family and friends and a progression of his life over the years. It may be difficult, but he'll probably appreciate and cherish it.
Good luck!

Get him something that does not remeind him he is 1/2 a century old. What does he like? Does he like to fish? Some new tackle might be nice. Is he an avid sports fan? Does he follow his college sports team? Memorabilia from that school might be nice. The main thing is, give him something that clearly tells him you love him, and genuinly care that he has a wonderful birthday. Maybe even take him out to dinner.

A day spent with you. Most guys this age have everything they need or they buy what they want when they want it. So it's kind of pointless to get them anything. Most of the time, they would rather spend time with their kids than anything because time is becoming precious and he probably misses spending time with you anyway. Spending time with your folks is better than any present you could ever give them.
As a gag:
You could make him a cake and stuff 50 candles on the top for him to blow out. With that many candles, you could light up a warehouse. he he!

I made my father a photo album of pics of all his kids, including step children . I made sure that all of the grandchildren were in the album also. I asked family members to send me photos so that they may be pics he had never seen before. I didnt put my photos first. I put them in order of birth, including stepchildren. So that put me fifth in the album. He truly enjoys the album and the time and effort that went into it was a lot of fun for me too.

If he likes coins you can get him a proof set from one of the current series from usmint.gov
Sometimes they're nice to commemorate birth years, anniversaries, etc.
I have several from my kids birthday years for them, one for myself, and a few other rare coins. You don't have to be an avid collector, sometimes it's just nice to see an uncirculated set.
Good luck.

it is always hard to shop for someone who doesn't really need anything. One year, I bought a piece of real estate on the moon for my dad, he got a real kick out of that!
