Our 10 yr old mastiff went into the vet yesterday, he had been throwing up for 2 days. we found out this morning that he has severe kidney disease and will need to be put down. My kids 5, 7, 9 and 14 know he spent the night at the vets and he is sick. Should I tell them and let them say goodbye or should we do this privately and tell them after Christmas.

Tell them, be matter of fact about it. Say he is an old dog, and all living things will die sometime, and it is his time to go.

Don't be really dramatic, say yes, it is sad, but be matter of fact, and they will learn to be that way from your example.

And ask them if they want to go to the vet to say goodbye, or not and respect their wishes, if some want to go, okay, and if others want to stay home, that is okay too.

and then get them a new puppy!!!

It's going to upset them regardless of when you tell them...but not being able to say goodbye to their long time friend in person would upset them all the more I think. Let them say their goodbyes and have them do a little group project that you can say is a gift for him to take with him for Christmas up in heaven. Good Luck...sorry you have to due this...it's always hard to have to put a family pet down...their just that...part of the family.

After Christmas for sure. It will devastate them. The dog can live a few more days in this case. Is it able to come home for holiday? This will also allow them to say their goodbyes properly at home.

I'm very sorry for you all.

I agree that you should tell them now. To add onto it, have your kids do an activity in remembrance of your dog. Like, if this is Christmas, then have them make a special ornament for your tree in honor of him.

Tell them now- they will be upset regardless, but won't feel betrayed that you kept it a secret. If possible, let them go say goodbye, and give him a kiss and hug- getting to see him one last time to say goodbye will help them alot.
