I assume that you own US PS3. US PS3 is in NTSC U/C region, while Japan is in NTSC J region. So you can't play japanese PS2 games. Only PS3 games are region free. PS1/2 games and movies aren't.

Only if you have a Japanese PS3.
PS3 is only region free for BluRays and Ps3 games. It is not region free for PS2, Ps1 or DVD's. It will only play those if they are from the same region as your PS3.

PS3 games will work from all round the world with any PS3.
PS1 and PS2 games are locked into the original region of the machine.
eg.
UK PAL PS3 will play UK PAL PS1 and PS2 games but all PS3 games.
USA NTSC PS3 will play USA NTSC PS1 and PS2 games but all PS3 games.
JAP NTSC PS3 will play JAP NTSC PS1 and PS2 games but all PS3 games.
I own a UK PAL PS3 and have tried USA and JAP PS1 and PS2 games on it and none will work - (I have original imported games as both my PS1 and PS2 are imported consoles one from JAP one from USA)
