It really depends on the company. My dad is a truck driver and he is all the time needing gloves, little flash lights, like pen lights he can keep in his pocket. And books on cd's are a good thing too, he loves them.

Bedding for the bunk. A plug in cooler. Cooleman and Igloo make good ones. You can get them at Wal-Mart for under a $100. A good thermos, and coffee mug. A plug in stove and tin pans to heat up food. The stove can be found at any truck stop and the pans can be found at Wal- Mart for $.99 for 3. Any thing you can do to make fixing meals in the truck will save thousands over the year. Highly advise. Small tool set, nothing big. A small 5 lbs. sledge hammer/mallet. He has to adjust the axles on the trailer and at times the pins need some persuasion to release. The company will pay for repairs at a shop. These are nice, but not necessary. A truckers atlas. Rand Mcnally is my favorite. United Map makes a good one also. Small note books(pocket size), pens, ruler(he will lose the one the company gave him.), calculator. Highly advise this paragraph. Good flashlight, tire thumper, work gloves, tire gauge ( one that will read up to 150 psi). Highly advise. An ac/dc tv- vcr or dvd combo helps pass the time while in the truck stop. These can get a little pricey though. Not necessary, but nice. The cooler and stove I highly advise. Meals in a truck stop are avg. $10 x 3 a day = $30 X 7days a week = $210 a week x 46 weeks out ( about avg for long haul) = $9,660 a year in meals. Compare this to the cost of a cooler and stove plus pans and groceries.

All he really needs is a few changes of clothes and a flashlight. The other stuff you mentioned is not necessary although some drivers have them. My Dad the ex long haul trucker says to start with the basics of the clothes and flashlight and add to that stuff as the need arises.

I've been a truck driver for 16 years. All of the things you mention will be used and appreciated. Anything you think he might use on the road, he probably will. The simple creature comforts you take for granted, he will sorely miss. I highly advise a cell phone. Over the years, nothing has been used more. All the gadgets and extras out there won't replace the sound of his familys voice. It's also a great work tool for locating the places he has to deliver to. Directions are many times wrong.

What he needs to carry is totally dependant on the region he runs, his employer, and his personal needs. Most drivers provide their own flashlights, basic tools, gloves, and clothing. A cooler is handy if he will be away for longer periods, it is cheaper to than eating out all the time.

i bring a cooler, flashlight, a broom (to sweep trailers), a crow bar (remove nails off the floor inside trailer), sleeping blanket,
pillow, rain jacket, rain/snow boots, a small sledge hammer(tap stuck pins in when moving tandems on trailer), hat and gloves (winter), work gloves (use in fueling), a tire knocker, a multi-purpose tool (like a leatherman tool), winter jacket, several rubber tie-downs, enough clothes to last him for the entire number of days he is on the road so he does not have to do any laundry. i hope i covered most of your question.

Maybe a laptop with an aircard for his downtime and to communicate with the family. Klennex for .....
Books. deer jerky. A mug that will keep his coffe hot. Do not let him take drugs or those stupid "keepawake" pills. They are addictive. Pictures of you and the family. Pillow and blankets for the sleeper. a pack of leather gloves. and many of the other things already mentioned above.
