It got replaced with the 80GB model. It's almost the same thing and it is the same price as the 60GB. The 40GB is a liitle worse, but it really depends on what your using it for. If you want to play games and watch Blu-Rays the 40GB will work fine. If you want to use all the music, photo and video storing features then the 80GB is better.
The 40GB can't play old PS2 or PSone games either.

The 60GB PS3 and the old 20GB PS3 have been discontinued and replaced with the new 40GB and 80GB models for less, 80GB $499 and 40GB for $399, I recommend the 80GB it is the better buy, has 4 USB vs 2, card reader, plays SA-CD, and has the larger hard drive, but most important it is backward compatible with PS2 games.

They reduced the price to £349 and bundled a game at the same time they released the 40GB model (at £299), so the 60GB sold out.
PC world have an ad. on at the moment saying they've had some more come in, and Sony, as far as i know, haven't stated that it is discontinued, so it may just be they're having trouble keeping up with demand.

Sony stated that a lot of people were complaining about the high price, so they had removed a PS2's CPU (Emotion Engine=27$). The version without EE, but with a PS2's GPU (Graphics Synthesizer) is 80GB, it supports around 80% of PS2 games (available only in NTSC regions). The cheapest version without any of PS2's chips is 40GB. It doesn't support ANY of PS2's games.

The original 60 gig had ps2 hardware in it, thus the backwards compatability. They were costing sony too much to make and so they planned to pull the ps2 hardware from the units and make backwards compatability a downloadable in october 07. They even tried saying that it was the ps2 hardware that made them overheat, I have one and have yet to need a cooler. But you can only get one used. Sony wants you to have to buy a ps2 ps3 and a psp to play all the games. As for which is better what do you want to do with it?
