I have a recipe that calls to dilute geletin in a 1/4 cup of rum.?

Can I just use water instead, with maybe some vanilla?

It's better to reduce the amount of rum and substitute water.

Bear in mind that if the mixture is going to be boiled, the alcohol in the rum will evaporate.
