Thomas Merton wrote, 'speaking between friends,and i consider you a friend, because having read so far, somehow we've touched one the other.' a friend, who was also a friend of Merton's lent me an unpublished typescript of Merton's. only a few people had ever read it. it felt to me that he was really speaking to me, that the book was a long letter from a dear friend who happened to die before i could meet him.

Yes, we can know a person's "heart" even though we have never met them.
I think you really want to know if we can tell whether there is congruity between what a person says, a person professes and what a person really does. The point at which the say and do meets is the heart.
The heart of the matter: Is the person genuine or a lying scum.
By their works you will know them.

No, you can't know someone's heart ever. Even those who are pious in public can be evil in private. I don't think you really ever get to know someone's heart completely. There's just too much people aren't willing to share...and most of it is dark.
