Peroxide will not harm your child. You can also get Ambesol Cold Sore medication or Carmex to speed the healing and help with the pain.

Treatment of oral herpes (cold sores) in children is primarily aimed at the symptoms. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, etc.) can be used for pain. The child must be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. And be sure to make these mild fluids -- juices and carbonated beverages can cause pain when they touch the sores.
Peroxide has been proven to work in adults, but i wouldn't put it on his skin since he is so young. Get some tea tree oil and dab 3 times a day.

I wouldn't use peroxide. Instead, use Neosporin with Pain Relief formula (I believe it is lidocaine). Also, if it is within the first 48 hours of its first appearance you can use Abreva which can shorten the time of the coldsore. You should check with the doctor to be sure it is ok to use though.
Good luck and have a Happy Christmas.

Talk with your pediatrician about a Denavir (penciclovir cream 1%) prescription. It will shorten the duration of the sore by about 1/2 and if you notice another one forming in the future, application will stop it from developing. Keep it in the fridge to extend the life of the drug, it's expensive but worth every penny.

It's probably not a cold sore but impetigo. Frequently occurs in children.
Use a standard antibiotic ointment - such as Neosporin
