Why an Israelite? Most Jews who live in Israel are of European descent. Israel is only 50 years old after all. To truly capture what everyone looked like in the middle east at the time, a Palestinian might be a better representation.

To answer your question, they don't care about accuracy in Hollywood. And Mel Gibson is bat crap crazy.

Until recently, there weren't very many Israelite actors.

I think Mel Gibson did a decent job with his movie, "Passion of the Christ", but otherwise, not very many Jews want to be portrayed as Jesus.

There are movies where Jesus is seen wearing all the Jewish gear.

The Christian bible notes that he wore tzitzit (Luke 8:44).
